When I started installing Linux on an old 486 to teach myself Unix Administration there was a problem with the printer drivers where the printers would "Step"
this is stepping
this is stepping

So I went on usenet for help and everyone there was great.
Later I found out that one reason it was great was that Robert Hanssen was always deleted by mods for being an asshole to newbies.
When he had a problem he was as polite as could be. When someone else had a problem he was a jerk who was very insulting.
Basically usenet mods probably helped my career today by getting rid of trolls like Hanssen.
What was really funny about Hanssen was that the Soviets had one of their best intel assets ever but the one they were most excited about at the time was David Rockefeller's piano tuner. According to the Mitrotkhin archives they loved that useless piano tuner though he gave them nothing. They assumed they were going to be privy to Capitalist Five Year Plans and then be able to thwart them.
Meanwhile Hanssen had the inside scoop on counter-intelligence within the US but the KGB considered ghosting Hanssen (Perhaps because he was an asshole to them too)
Anyway, here is a write up from an expert, David Aaron, a former DOJ / CES prosecutor with a lot of experience in Classified Information Procedures Act.
