Eight Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza in one of the deadliest single incidents for Israeli forces since October 7
Story by Lauren Izso and Ibrahim Dahman, CNN • 1h

Eight Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Gaza on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces says, in one of the deadliest single incidents involving its troops since October 7.

The IDF told CNN that the incident is under review and that different possible causes are being looked into.

But earlier, Al Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas said it “carried out a complex ambush against enemy vehicles” operating in Tal al-Sultan, which lies west of the southern city of Rafah.

The militant group said it targeted a military bulldozer, which then caught on fire, and killing and wounding the crew. When rescue troops arrived, they then struck an armored personnel carrier, killing the soldiers.

The incident comes as Israel continues its push into the southern city of Rafah, where there have been reports of air strikes and artillery shelling since dawn local time.

Russian warships leave Havana's port after a 5-day visit to Cuba
3h

HAVANA (AP) — A fleet of Russian warships, including a nuclear-powered submarine, left Havana’s port on Monday after a five-day visit to Cuba following planned military drills in the Atlantic Ocean. The exercise has been seen by some as a show of strength by Moscow against the backdrop of tensions as U.S. and other Western nations support Kyiv in Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The submarine, a frigate, an oil tanker and a rescue tug slowly departed from the port on Monday morning.

It’s unclear what the fleet’s next destination is or where it will dock next in the Caribbean, although U.S. officials said days ago that the vessels could possibly also stop in Venezuela.

Philippine officials say Chinese forces seized boats in South China Sea
Story by Jim Gomez, Associated Press • 3h

Chinese forces seized two Philippine rubber boats that were delivering food and other supplies to a military outpost in a disputed South China Sea shoal in a tense confrontation in which some Filipino navy personnel were injured, Philippine security officials said on Tuesday.

The United States renewed a warning that it is obligated to defend the Philippines, a treaty ally, a day after the hour-long hostilities in Second Thomas Shoal.

The shoal has been occupied by a small Philippine navy contingent aboard a long-grounded warship that has been closely monitored by China’s coast guard and navy in a years-long territorial standoff.

There is fear that territorial disputes in the South China Sea, long regarded as an Asian flashpoint, could escalate and pit the United States and China in a larger conflict. China and the Philippines blamed each other for Monday’s hostilities, the most serious in recent months, but provided few details.

North Korean Troops Suffer Multiple Casualties After Attempting to Enter DMZ
Story by Jared Harris • 3h

The North Korean military has suffered multiple casualties after an ill-fated trip into the Demilitarized Zone in an incident that highlights growing tension between the two nations.

According to Reuters, citing South Korea's Yonhap News, the situation unfolded Tuesday morning as dozens of Northern soldiers breached the defensive line.

The troops only made it about 65 feet into the DMZ before being forced back

These troops were made to turn tail and run after the South fired off warning shots, but the North's blunders were far from over.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff claimed the Northern teams have now suffered multiple casualties after working closely in and around the DMZ.

"It appears that the North Korean military is carrying out the work [in the DMZ] in an unreasonable manner despite the fact that many casualties are occurring due to several landmine explosions while creating barren land and working on landmines in the frontline area," an official cited by Yonhap News explained.

Russia Begins Pacific Maneuvers: Focus on Air Strikes and Submarines
Story by Sededin Dedovic • 9h

Russia commenced naval exercises in the Pacific today, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced. The exercises will focus on submarines and air strikes, according to AFP. About 40 ships and 20 aircraft and helicopters will participate in the maneuvers, which will last for 10 days in Russia's Far East.

The exercises were announced at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit North Korea to form a strategic partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Tactical Nuclear Exercises
Russia announced last week that soldiers and sailors from the northern Leningrad military region, which borders NATO members Norway, Finland, Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania, participated in military exercises with tactical nuclear weapons.

"Pyongyang has always been our committed and like-minded supporter, ready to confront the ambition of the collective West to prevent the emergence of a multipolar world order based on justice, mutual respect for sovereignty and consideration of each other’s interests," Putin wrote in an op-ed published Tuesday in North Korean state newspapers.

In the op-ed, Putin emphasized the fact that North Korean history and geopolitics are inexorably linked to Russia and the regional communist bloc that formed in the 20th century.

Taiwan keeping watch after Chinese submarine surfaces in Taiwan Strait
Story by Reuters • 18h

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's defence minister said on Tuesday that they have a "grasp" of the situation after pictures appeared online of a Chinese nuclear submarine surfacing in the sensitive Taiwan Strait near Taiwanese fishermen.

The narrow strait that separates Taiwan from China is a frequent source of tension. Taiwan reports Chinese warplanes and warships operating there on a daily basis, as Beijing seeks to assert its sovereignty claims against the democratically governed island.

Taiwanese media published the pictures of the surfaced craft, which appears to be a nuclear-armed Jin class ballistic missile submarine, taken by a Taiwanese fishing boat in the strait as dawn broke on Tuesday, about 200 km (125 miles) from Taiwan's western coast.

We do read the news here. Feel free to offer your thoughts on these stories.
"[Fighting] Germany we could take away everything from them. Make the Nazis no longer economically viable until the country they used as their vehicle surrendered to us on our terms..but we do not have that condition available for us now. We cannot bomb our own country but they have the option of to be violent, so we have to hit them legally and economically so they can no longer function or else someone else will need to bomb us to get rid of them." One soldier reportedly lost a thumb while others were injured and boats were damaged.
Beijing denied responsibility, but US and Philippines officials criticized China.
Filipino soldiers had to defend themselves with bare hands against Chinese coast guard armed with swords and knives, according to the Philippines.

The Chinese coast guard personnel reportedly rammed their vessels into boats belonging to the Philippines on Monday, and boarded and attacked them, the BBC reported, leaving some injured and one soldier having lost a thumb.

General Romeo Brawner, the Philippines' top military commander, criticized China for what he described as "reckless and aggressive" behavior while the Philippines navy and coast guard were delivering supplies to Filipino soldiers in the disputed South China Sea.

CAN'T HAVE A WAR WITHOUT ATROCITIES!

Israeli army strapped wounded Palestinian to jeep
1 hour ago By Robert Plummer,
BBC News

The Israeli military has said its forces violated protocol by strapping a wounded Palestinian man to the front of their vehicle during a raid in the West Bank city of Jenin.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the incident after it was captured on video and shared on social media. An IDF statement said the man was wounded in an exchange of fire during the raid, in which he was a suspect.
The injured man's family said that when they asked for an ambulance, the army took him, strapped him to the bonnet of their jeep and drove off.

The individual was eventually transferred to the Red Crescent for treatment. The IDF said the incident would be investigated.
Eyewitnesses speaking to Reuters news agency identified him as a local man and named him as Mujahed Azmi.
"This morning [Saturday], during counter-terrorism operations to apprehend wanted suspects in the area of Wadi Burqin, terrorists opened fire at IDF troops, who responded with fire," the IDF statement said.

"During the exchange of fire, one of the suspects was injured and apprehended.
"In violation of orders and standard operating procedures, the suspect was taken by the forces while tied on top of a vehicle.

After attack in Dagestan, Russian officials minimize Islamic State claim

Russian lawmakers on Monday quickly blamed external forces, including Ukraine and NATO, for terrorist attacks on Sunday that killed at least 19 people in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region of Russia in the North Caucasus that has long been a hotbed of violence by Islamist militants.

The gunfire attacks on Sunday — at a police post, a synagogue and Orthodox churches in the regional capital of Makhachkala and a second city, Derbent — killed at least 17 police officers and an Orthodox priest, authorities said.

Pro-Kremlin media appeared to play down a claim from Al Azaim Media, a Russian-language channel associated with the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, which posted a statement late Sunday that the attack was carried out in response to calls for attacks on behalf of the Islamic State organization, or ISIS.

Dagestan governor Sergei Melikov said that six suspects were killed during the operation.

“Our recent call did not keep us waiting long,” the Al Azaim post said. “Our brothers from the Caucasus let us know that they are still strong. They showed what they are capable of.”

Dagestan has experienced some unrest apparently tied to Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza.
