Mustafa

Postby Kabul-Caine » Wed Oct 12, 2005 7:45 am

I was there in October 2003 and slept on the floor in a $20/night room rented by a British journo friend. Cash was really tight for me as I had been travelling for two months prior. I would highly suggest asking for a room at the rear of the complex as the Mustafa has been a target in the past from the front roadside. Can never be too careful.

The location is fabulous as the infamous Chicken Street is a mere block away replete with all of its exotic Central Asian flea market charm and hordes of street kids who will offer to be your bodyguard for "yak dollar mister". I secured two such heavies for my protection whilst there; brothers named Asad and Aziz...look for them!

The Mustafa is an excellent place to hang out and meet journos, merc types and thrill seekers. I was fortunate enough to score a breakfast with the author and journalist Christina Lamb one morning.

The meals are reasonable priced considering everything is generally "expensive" in Kabul...considering what we are used to in other parts of Asia which are not occupied by internationals with heavy toys.

I took a front room.
Couldn't resist the Call to Prayer from the Mosque across the street
and the view of TV hill was fantastic every morning.
