KUALA LUMPUR (Kyodo) The Japanese Embassy in Kuala Lumpur was evacuated Tuesday after it received a suspicious envelope later found to contain an unidentified liquid and a CD-ROM, police said.
Envelopes containing similar items were also sent to the embassies of Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Germany and Canada, they said, retracting earlier information that the Irish Embassy had also received one.
A bomb squad and the fire department's hazardous materials unit responded to an embassy call for assistance at around 2:10 p.m., but no bomb was found, bomb-squad official Omar Zakaria told reporters.
In Tokyo, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday evening that the embassy has since been declared safe and has resumed operations.
Abdul Aziz Bulat, chief of the Malaysian police force's Criminal Investigation Department, said the envelopes sent to the various embassies each contained a CD-ROM and some kind of liquid. The items were taken to a forensic laboratory for testing.
There were no notes, Abdul Aziz said, noting the addresses on the envelopes indicate they were sent from the northeastern state of Kelantan.
