I am also working on a Mark Twain.

His real life adventures and travels as a young man. It's not as polished as his fiction but it's a great read nonetheless.

If you've got an ebook it's free here...

I read that book last summer.

He really seemed to be quite the hiker, he sure got around. I have been to most of the various towns and mining areas in Calif and Nevada that he wrote about back when he was thinking he was a miner. (was that a run-on sentence ?) The story about his exploration of Mono Lake was cool.

Some where in my collection I have some local Calaveras County Ca. published books I got from my grandfather about him. I'll have to find them.

I'm only halfway through it but really enjoying it. His style in this book reminds me of Three men in a boat. That guy really had some adventures. I love the way he lands a $1,000,000 mine, loses it and just moves on without really giving a shit.

I would appreciate the name of the author that wrote about him. I'd like to read more about his real life adventures.

Packing for El Salvador:

I always travel with "The Atlas" by Vollman. Just a great travel book, very, very short stories that you can read and be done with and go to sleep with.

Bringing "The Age of the Warrior", Robert Fisk, for some prep reading in hopes of getting my ticket to the Middle East.

Biography of Trujillo. 90% sure I've got to do some D.R.-Haitian border correspondence in a few months, figure I should brush up. Plus, I can dump it once I've finished it. Hard to re-read biographies, no?

Ill fares the land, by Tony Judt. And a crime novel.
Shes never interfered with me. I have no complaints about her.
Same here.
Mega ditto.
I met her once and I found her to be a nice lady. Not kookey in any way.
Penta has always been gracious, kind and very sane in all my interactions with her.

I'm just getting into Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin by Timothy Snyder.

It's pretty cool because rather than try to tell the history of a political region or a particular people, he isolates a zone of death across Poland and the Ukraine, and between the Baltic and the Black Sea. 14 million non-combatants were killed there in 12 years. The mass starvation of Ukrainians during the first Five Year Plan, the Holocaust, Hitler's starvation of Soviet prisoners of war, and Stalin's political murders all then get told as part of one story.

Norman F. Cantor rocks.

At the moment he is my favorite historian.

History of The Byzantine State and Society by Warren Treadgold.

I am putting Treadgold in the ranks among Cantor and V.A Fine right now. A very good book but it is very long.

There is an interview with Snyder at this site:

I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.
