Your current reading list

Postby vagabond » Wed Dec 06, 2006 3:47 pm

So lately I've turned off the tv and become an even more voracious reader. Unfortunately, this leads to quite a lot of Amazon purchasing and a backlog. I'm sure there's some others around here that can commiserate with me.

What are you currently reading and what are the next three on your list?

For me:

Current: See No Evil by Bob Baer; on the side: The Fountainhead (Rand) and The Great Game by Peter Hopkirk

Next:

1) The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham
2) Russia As It Is by Matthew Maly
3) The Heart of the World by Ian Baker

I went through pretty much everything by Vince Flynn two weeks ago.
I need new books.
When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? To surrender dreams - -this may be madness; to seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness! But maddest of all - -to see life as it is and not as it should be.

Freaking awesome. Love the artwork.

I recently read Paul Cartleges book on Thermopylae. Was good, but the chapters on the actual battle were pretty short. Good book for overview, well written.

Always re-reading the Flashman books.

Am now started on a book called the Heritage of Spain. Picked it up for a buck in used book store. It covers pre-Roman times through about the 1960's in 300 pages.

it's being made into a movie, very stylized and slick like miller's other comic turned movie, sin city. looks like it'll be pretty cool.

watch the trailer.

as for books, now that i've got a break between semesters i'm getting around to reading machiavelli's 'art of war', and 'making a killing: how and why corporations use armed force to do business' by madelaine drohan.

i'd also like recommend khalid hosseini's 'the kite runner' to absolutely anyone who can read and hasn't read it yet.

I read 'Xerxes Invades Greece' [Herodotus] and on the strength of that searched out '300' and some other Miller yarns. 'Hard Boiled' was awesome, the art is sooo detailed. 'Ronin' was revolutionary for it's time and certainly holds up well today.

'Wolverine' featured a drunk, mouthy Canadian with a fixation on Japanese women and knives. I could really understand where the character was coming from.

Currently, 'Soul On Ice' by Eldridge Cleaver.

Think I already read Hard Boiled, it's a comic no?

Pageing through 'the rape of Belgium' by Larry Zuckermann. Haven't been able to get my paw on any of the Flashman-books. Think I'll mail-order 'em.

I'm currently reading The Places In Between by Rory Stewart. It is about the author's travels through Afghanistan right after the Taliban fell.

I also have a pile of travel books about South Africa and Mozambique that I'm wading through right now.

and your opinion on this book? i liked the descriptive passages about afghanistan's people and country, the explanation of politics and religion. The story was very good (redemptive) and not "hollywood" but i ain't down with that btutfuckin shite...i was not expecting that and i guess that is somewhat of a sucker punch but hosseini can write a book to be sure...
where are you going? why don't you walk the wheel with us? what is the matter my american friend? what has upset you?
