Not if you read Voyage of the Space Beagle by A. E. Van Vogt. It's full of men turning their vibrators on one another in heated moments.

I assume by "in heated moments" you do not mean sexy fun time?

OK.. Point taken along with toothbrushes being used as a shiv.

Interesting, Voyage of the Space Beagle was an important work to my childhood mind, hardly anyone I meet has ever heard of it. I was hoovering up Asimov, Aldiss and Niven et al et al long before I gave a fuck about history, politics and I suspect will return there once I'm completely tired of reading the news. I can only assume this site attracts sci fi geeks, among other characters.

Just started this:

This Pelton guy might go far.

And might spring for this next though I kind of lost my taste for Kaplan the past few yrs:

Thankfully no - in this case the vibrator in question was a personal sidearm that, one assumes, induces a molecular vibration in the target resulting in anything from concussion to death (like all good SF weapons, it has a dial).

I also found something about Van Vogt's writing to be very interesting as a child - his SF is quite fundamentally different from most others'; probably due to the interest in exotic thought systems that form the basis of his work. I had access to a couple of Null-A books in my formative years and thus got General Semantics rather than Nexialism. The Weapon Shops of Isher would've been good at that age as well.

4 out of 5, better than Bez's effort from a few years ago. A refreshing change from anodyne footballer and 'celebrity' memoirs, from someone who put the 'rock' (of crack) in to 'rock n roll'

I can't decide between an uplifting Ann Coulter tome, the entire Twilight series, or Miley Cyrus' in depth autobiography. So much out there.

i found this book at a recent pilgrimage back home. read it like a whole 60 minutes. (the president of the company my brotherinlaw works for, gave one to everyone. personally signed. :))
but it showed me why i thought i was great and why my former boss didn't.
it's seriously made a difference.
well, i think so, anyways. we'll have to see what my former boss thinks.
har.
it's a bit dated.
apologies if this has already been discussed.

After many years of eBay trawling, begging by readers who wanted all 20 issues released in book form, the original and legendary Scouse fanzine 'The End' has finally been dug up and released for general consumption.

The mag that first introduced us to 'Teds' and 'Joe Wag', telling tales of the terraces, and what trainers were 'in' and 'out', and inspired every fanzine, football and music, since. Essential reading, just like it was in the 80s. "Buy it you mingebags".
