I've just got back from Iraq and it is not club med, but it is old news. How about a documentary on what Ultra Swain is doing right now? Good stuff in a place the Communist News Network (CNN) and even Sky or Fox doesn't report on. Ultra is on to something (doing good things for people in oppressed countries that are poor as shit) and hopefully we can do some good before the usual warlords take over. Just a thought....

The doc would mostly be me sitting at a computer or at a meeting not understanding a word that is being said. But there would be comic relief while we sit around the bar making fun of the 2 new UNHCR staff that just rotated in. 2 days in and they already ended up with the names "Bum Licker" and "Turnip Head". Who says the UN doesn't work fast?

Do you think for a single minute that RYP is a threat to al Qaeda? Come on. Really? So an admonition for RYP to avoid anyone who has heard of his penchant for playing silly games with government money and wannabe assassins is equal to a love for al Qaeda? As for me, I've spent plenty of time outside the Hescos, and I don't feel compelled to justify myself to you. If you want to know what I've done, you can read about it. The same goes for the version of democracy that I'm pushing. If you want to argue the finer points of COIN or stabilization, I'm your Huckleberry. I can hold my own with the best of them, and I have. I do this shit for a living, war tourist. I know what I'm doing and I really don't need any validation from the likes of you. You've got no idea what you're talking about, and now I am absolutely sure that you aren't involved in anything significant, because if you were you would see some of the things, including civilian things, that are beginning to happen... and some of them already underway. So, suspicion confirmed; you are useless.

Dude, I have no problem with civilians, or contractors for that matter. As a matter of fact, I think that it's time for the civilians to make their contribution, because governance and development aren't things that the military is the best fit for. I advocate using Afghan civilian contractors to perform TCAPF data collection, for instance, because it's a ton better for Afghans to do it and we get better data fidelity from that anyway. That helps us to do better program design to address root causes of instability and reduce the relevance of insurgents in a given area. OTI is doing marvelous things. We're big fans. IDLG and some of their contractors are doing good things, too.

So, you can rattle off the IAVA/IVAW/Code Pink/TPM bullshit all day long. You don't know what you're talking about and you've proven that. On the other thread, I just posited that it's possible you may deserve the benefit of the doubt; now I know that is not the case.

On a more serious note, I think that the work that UltraSwain was involved with was awesome and stuff like that, while not lame-dramatic in the way of "the adventurist," would be a great thing to show people. People have no clue the type of work that is being done by folks who are willing sacrifice comfort and potentially endanger their own health to go out into really poor areas and make such a difference in people's lives.

Plus, no one is likely to cut off your head. Don't think those folks get the NYT. It's a win-win. Good stuff, unlikely to get you killed. It might even redeem part of your soul.

Downside: No lame drama, no pirates.
