Vancouver 2010 Wrap-up

The Olympics Closing Ceremony on February 28 marked the end of the 17-day 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. While OSAC will continue to monitor the 2010 Paralympics from headquarters and provide updates or alerts as necessary, OSAC’s formal Olympics coverage will cease at 12 p.m., today, March 1.

Thankfully, there were no significant security concerns during these Olympics. However, the frequent protest activity in Vancouver, particularly during the first weekend of the Games, resulted in traffic delays, damage to facilities, and concern for the safety of constituent personnel. In addition, while the general crime rate decreased in Vancouver, constituents in the hospitality industry reported stolen tickets, surveillance, petty theft, and trespassers. Security breaches at BC Place Stadium were widely reported in the press but ultimately had no effect on constituent operations.

OSAC’s Major Events team would like to thank you all for helping us create what was hopefully a useful and worthwhile product: our efforts depend to a significant degree on the information and assistance provided by the private sector. In particular, our team would like to thank the constituents who reported incidents and protest activity so that we could relay that vital information to our larger group.

But they will never love us, for we have too much audacity!
