An Airbus A330-202 passenger plane, operated by Afriqiyah Airways, was destroyed when it crashed while on approach to Tripoli International Airport (TIP), Libya. The airplane, operating as Afriqiyah Airways flight 771 had left Johannesburg-O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), South Africa on an international passenger flight to Tripoli International Airport (TIP). There were 11 crew members and 93 passengers on board. Some 70 of those were Dutch. Footage from the scene suggested the airplane crashed and broke up about 900 m from the runway 09 threshold and 200 m to the south of the extended centreline. This might indicate that the crash occurred during final approach to runway 09 or during a go-around from runway 27. The tail came to rest close to a mosque with the rear of the tail pointing east, towards the runway. The airplane was completely destroyed. A Dutch boy was the sole survivor of the accident. Runway 09 does not have an ILS. Only a Locator approach is available. Runway 27 does have ILS. Also, the Tripoli VOR was NOTAMed unreliable ("INTERFERENCE FROM SIGNAL BEING EXPERIENCED DURING CURRENT AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT WORK ( TPI VOR SHOULD BE USED WITH CAUTION.")
