Do we want a BFC Memorial Forum?

Postby Dr. V » Sat Apr 14, 2012 7:58 am

Recent deaths and a comment on the RR3 thread have lead me to think about a BFC sub Memorial Forum. Kurt says he can build one and I can populate it by going back through the archives and (hopefully) find all the relevant RIP posts for departed Flaggers.

However given the nature of the BFC it would have to come with a few riders as we don't want the sub forum to be taken over by fake or incorrect death announcements.

Essentially it would be a read only forum which we would move locked RIP posts to after a certain period of time. If people were late to the thread and wanted to add posts we could unlock the post, move it to the main board and open it up for comments.

You can see a similar Memorial sub forum in action here: http://www.trucknetuk.com/phpBB/

Before we put in the work I wanted to find out if people want a RIP forum or not so you have a week to vote.

I would be in favor of such a forum.

Here is another example from another forum I occasionally frequent: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=350637. It is only viewable for users who are members and logged-in to the site. Having it "locked" is a wise idea.

Given that you have not defined departed or death I have assumed that Penta qualifies for a memorial and I have prepared it accordingly:

Here lies Penta
BFC days are now all spent yeah
Yet she still won't shut her gob
though her audience is only ROB.

Creepy. I can't think of a good reason why it's creepy. But I don't care for the idea at all.

Since I lost my chance for ARLINGTON, then, I guess,
This BFC Memorial would be the next best thing *SOB*

I'm highly offended that you think so; I was planning on claiming that honour.

For the record I think it's a fucking stupid idea. The rest of the western world, especially those drippy bastards in Liverpool, have become professional mourners about people they hardly know; I would have thought this place immune to such saccharine pap.

Not enough people croaking either, although I'm guessing there's a few here ready to curl their toes due to being geriatric old bastards. And the number of flaggers actually in danger of receiving real physical harm by being located in genuinely dangerous places is miniscule.

The BFC should have a Battle Royale-type meet, where weapons are handed out freely beforehand and disputed access to the host's wine cellar kicks off hostilities

I'd use dave as a sandbag

I see no harm with such a forum, but when its my turn don't put me in it, in fact I don't need any of the laments, no offence folks, I just don't want them in the same way I won't be having some god botherer saying words over me or people who didn't really get me in life saying "He was a lovely fella" over a curled up ham sandwich and a double vodka.

its a good idea. make it only visible after logging in. let those who think its gay ignore it. let those who think its valuable honor it.

The only problem with making it read only after logging in is that friends / relatives would not be able to see it unless they became members of the forum.

is this supposed to be for friends and relatives of the deceased or for people on the bfc? i think you should indicate exactly what the goals are (or the different sets of possible goals).

additionally, there is nothing stopping friends and relatives from doing just as you described.

The read only part is non negotiable so the remaining options are:

1) No RIP forum

2) RIP forum which is viewable to everyone on the internet

3) RIP forum which is only viewable to members

4) Something else I haven't though of (please feel free to elaborate)
