I bet. Back in the 80s when being young and openly gay in some places put you in a degree of physical danger I had to work with varying degrees of closet cases. The easiest to be around were actually the strict religious ones. Closeted sexuality can easily be explained away by being a strict religious person (I worked with a guy who was engaged to what appeared to by a pig/human hybrid..his story was that they would wait until marriage to have sex and only have sex for procreation unless he decided to become a priest or enter a monastery). The worst were the ones who thought they were perfectly normal and everyone else was "wrong", they were the angry petty control freaks who lashed out at the young women who got young men's attention so easily and they lashed out at the young men for ignoring them. Real homosexuals would even bear more of their wrath because they could see right through them.

Dunno where or if Manning fit into any of these but it would be weird to go back in time to an era like that and those fellows who acted like that were always vulnerable to either some strong drinks or some blackmail artist.

a lot of "confused" young boys seek religion as a outlet. We had a guy in my school who used to hold mass and take confessions at the tender age of 11. Prolly why you hear all this altar boy stuff and defrocked evangelists. Joining the military (and going to jail I guess) would put you in the direct proximity of hundreds of males.

Better that they should become hairdressers.

(Reuters) - Bradley Manning, the U.S. soldier sentenced to 35 years in military prison for the biggest breach of classified documents in the nation's history, said on Thursday he is female and wants to live as a woman named Chelsea.

Manning received the sentence on Wednesday for giving more than 700,000 secret files, videos and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks. His lawyers had argued the former Army intelligence analyst suffered a sexual identity crisis when he leaked the files while serving in Iraq in 2009 and 2010.

"As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning, I am a female," Manning, 25, said in the statement read by anchorwoman Savannah Guthrie on NBC News' "Today" show.

"Given the way that I feel and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible," Manning said. "I also request that starting today you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun."

An Army spokeswoman said the Army does not provide hormone therapy or sex-change surgery.

Manning's lawyer David Coombs said on the TV program he expected his client to get a pardon from U.S. President Barack Obama.

Manning was convicted last month on 20 charges, including espionage and theft. He will serve his sentence at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Coombs has said Manning could be pardoned in seven years.

Coombs said Manning was seeking hormone therapy and not a sex-change operation.

"I'm hoping that Fort Leavenworth will do the right thing and provide that. If Fort Leavenworth does not, then I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure that they are forced to do so," he said.

An Army spokeswoman said in an emailed statement, "The Army does not provide hormone therapy or sex-reassignment surgery."

Military inmates have access to mental health professionals, including a psychiatrist, psychologist, social workers and behavioral science specialists, she said.

"COMFORTABLE IN HER SKIN"

Asked if Manning wanted to be sent to a women's prison, Coombs said no.

"I think the ultimate goal is to be comfortable in her skin and to be the person that she's never had an opportunity to be," he said.

Coombs said he was not worried about Manning's safety in a military prison since inmates there were first-time offenders who wanted to complete their sentences and get out.

Experts generally view military prisons as safer than civilian prisons since the inmates are accustomed to hierarchy and discipline.

Manning had not wanted his sexual identity issues to become public, but they did after his arrest in 2010, Coombs said.

"Now that it is (public), unfortunately you have to deal with it in a public manner," he said.

A psychiatrist, Navy Reserve Captain David Moulton, testified during Manning's trial that he suffered from gender dysphoria, or wanting to be the opposite sex, as well as narcissism and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Defense lawyers had argued that Manning had been increasingly isolated and under intense stress when he leaked the files, and that his superiors had ignored warning signs.

They cited erratic behavior, including sending a picture of himself dressed as a woman to a superior and punching another soldier.

In a related case involving sexual-identity issues in prisons, a federal judge last year ordered Massachusetts officials to pay for a convicted murderer's sex-change operation. The judge ruled the state had violated the inmate's constitutional rights in denying the procedure.

Religion attracts people confused about more than sexuality. The sexually confused ones sometimes hope that God can "cure" them.

HOLY JESUS FUCKING FUCK! FUCKING FRUIT LOOPS!
Oh, sorry...
I think people should screw whoever makes them happy. I'm glad this concept of curing homosexuals through prayer is going away.
But...
HOLY JESUS FUCKING FUCK! FUCKING FRUIT LOOPS!
Religious people are crazy enough as it is without them being fruit loops.

Maybe what makes them so crazy is that many of them are repressive homosexuals to some degree?

For years, the DOE had a rule that homosexuals, closeted or not, couldn't get Q clearances - which meant they couldn't work on nuclear stuff even for private companies. The reason, of course, was that homosexuals are sceeeeeeery because they might raep you, even though you are a man! But the reason the govt gave was that being gay would open them up to blackmail.

So, famously, one scientist offered to take out a full page advertisement in the Oak Ridger (Oak Ridge's paper of record) saying he was gay, so he could keep his clearance. This was in the late 1960s or early 1970s, and the DOE was like, what the fuck, what we totally need is every uneducated, backwoods thumper in East Tennessee preaching damnation and hellfire outside Y-12. They apparently hemmed and hawed and finally changed the rules, so you could get a security clearance as long as you were openly gay.

Now, this story has been going around Oak Ridge for decades, but no one seems to know who that brave scientist was. It might even be apocryphal, I don't know. But now that I'm back in the USA, perhaps it's worth doing a little research. The point, however, is that DADT was the stupidest idea ever for intel folks, because it forces everyone who is gay to either give in to blackmail or lose their job. If I'm a spy and I see some dude swishing around but saying he's straight, well, that's a guy I'm going to pay special attention to.

boo hoo for Chelsea. he wants to be a woman? here's to letting him have his way as he gets used like one in prison. anybody who has an ounce of sympathy for him can fuck off and die. the larger question/issue is how the hell he got into the army in the first place let alone a ts clearance. his recruiter needs to be in the cell next door. whoever did the background investigation on him needs to be in the can on the other side of his cell. he knew what was what when he joined. no sympathy. hope he gets buggered to death.

what is lacking is critical analysis. Had Manning found an illegality he could have become a "whistleblower" and there would have been some tortuous, long and ineffective inquiry

Had he sold this stuff he would be a wealthy man living in China, Israel, North Korea or Russia living the good life

If he had been selective he could have helped some fat headed big city writer get a Pulitzer.

But he did the right thing...proved that government is incompetent, allowed the unwashed to bath in mediocrity and will not go to jail for proving the obvious.

Snowden didn't provide more than what is in a number of fat tomes and Assange's condom broke...which is clear evidence of espionage and rape.

Look, I know it goes against the narrative, and I know Maddow and Huffpo know more about actually serving than for example I do, but shit is getting ridiculous, so one more time:

No one, save for a severely small minority, gives a flying monkey fuck if you are non Aryan, have a gash between your legs, or like to suck dick. It'll no doubt destroy your world, Friendly, but there is no secret cabal of military members trying to hold down the aforementioned. None, zip, zero, zilch.

You know what they/we do care about? That you can do the fucking job, under the TIME and EXPERIENCE influenced standards. Read that again, adjust panties for reality, then read it one more time.

No one cares if you're a black transgendered Transylvanian who likes to have sex with gay unicorns, UNTIL you start throwing it in people's faces, using it as an excuse as to why you can't do the job, or blaming it on why you didn't get promoted.

There is evidence that Manning may have done this very thing, and this is why no one fried his ass when he should have been shitcanned. No one wanted to be the test case for mutated, three horned, Southern jumping turtle sexual identification discrimination, so like that retard in high school who just kept getting passed to the next grade, they pushed Manning through.

Because let's face facts. "Minorities", women, aforementioned various sexual preferences don't want equality. Not true equality at least. So congrats to the pushers. You've created an environment where those that are supposed to prevent shit like this from happening (recruiters, investigators, etc) push unqualified and dangerous people along because they're scared of fucking lawsuits and such.

To me, anybody who believes in the supernatural is suspect from the start. Not only from a mental health standpoint, but simply having an inability to think straight.

they push them along because they are stupid or lazy or gutless or all three. If the military leadership didn't want to shit-can Manning, as he was obviously bad news as an employee <let alone a soldier> (throwing office-tantrums, fetal-postioning himself for all to see, punching a woman co-worker in the face) because they were afraid of a lawsuit then that just shows them as apathetic, inept and even cowardly.

Gender, what's gender got to do with this, absolutely nothing.

They are gutless because in the past people have lost hard earned careers over shit exactly like shitcanning those that don't qualify, but have the politically correct plumbing or pigment.

The fist in the face incident must have caused palpating of epic proportions. One protected class vs another. Which to side with?
