It's creepy how much time you spend trawling the BFC archives.

El Presidente wrote:Max Hastings in his latest book "Catastrophe 1914: Europe Goes to War" makes a pretty compelling argument that Germany may not have "started" the war, they were most responsible for egging it on. While British, Hastings offers a ruthless criticism of Britain's incompetence and even suggests borderline-criminal cowardice by UK commanders during the early months of WW1 which adds to his already persuasive argument against "no one was at fault".

I agree. I saw a 10 part series on the war that the brits did (BBC?). outstanding breakdown of the political machinations that got the balls rolling before and after "archie duke shot the ostrich." it truly was the war that didn't have to happen. if only one of the players had had any sense and backed off then it wouldn't have happened.
ps: wonder what the world would be like - no Communist Russia as we knew it, no Hitler, yadda yadda. talks amongst yourselves.

I believe Mick jagged summed it up most succinctly when he intoned...well after all it was you and me.

or we can blame it on Archduke Ferdinand for getting slotted.

I can't think of a single US president's assassination - and there have been many - that resulted in a war.

Of course there was that deaththreat against George the Elder - mess with the bull get the horns as they say...

you can fill in the rest.
