The Louise Shelley book I posted in the Reading List thread under "BFC Recommends" had half a chapter about cocaine shipping through Mali. According to Dr. Shelley, after the Patriot Act kind of fucked up the usual cocaine shipping routes, narcotraficantes started using several African nations, but especially Mali, to ship cocaine to Europe. Now it almost all goes through Mali. Haven't seen a bit about it from the talking heads discussing this attack, though. Seems like it's kind of important though.
