Every military has lardasses. In the UK they'll either be btdt senior ranks who have earned a few rolls of fat, we all age ffs. Or, reserve dental nurses who might not be expected to run 10:30 for a mile & a half.

But in Iraq/A'stan these were supposedly infanteers, or they were wearing infantry insignia like the Big Red 1. Even so, on operation even the REMFs are expected to be in reasonable physical condition.

I must add staying with the NZ contingent in Bamiyan for two months opened my eyes. Super fit. There was a big fuck off hill behind the base, a couple of km up, over along the ridge, and down the side, "PT Hill" they called it. One guy, a reservist, ran it twice a day, morning and evening, every day of his tour that he wasn't out somewhere. He was a reservist too. We did it as a team and I was blowing out my arse and walking after 15 mins, altitude you see lol.

Cheers

I noticed with the Americans over there that you could quite clearly see
who was special forces type and who weren't just by looking at the physical level of fitness.
I met a couple of colonels who looked like they had just stepped away from an Schwarzenegger film
or rather you could sure as shit tell those who were not.
I know the law. And I have spent my entire life in its flagrant disregard.

I continue to be suspicious of soldiers who spend time buffing their pecs and worrying about what they look like.
