Solar Eclipse 2017

Postby svizzerams » Thu Aug 03, 2017 9:50 pm

Who's going to chase it? And, if so where will you be viewing it?

I'll be in Salem, OR. Oregon is expecting about a million people to visit the state to see the eclipse. Knowing those little highways and byways in eastern OR it's going to be a bit crazy. I just hope people viewing it don't drive their vehicles off the road into the tinder dry grasses and burn the state down. Heat wave in progress. No rain in the near future.

I hear too that Nashville will be a prime viewing location. Only an 8 hr. drive from here but I'd be too tempted to keep going west after the event to hit Memphis, Little Rock & OKC, despite having long ago memories of the dog days of August and September down South. Miserable. Couldn't they reschedule the eclipse for October?

I hope Portland but an ongoing project in Seattle might take me away from the eclipse.

Central Oregon is a tinderbox right now. Relative humidity in Bend is 13% at 91° and a dew point around 40° :/ We'll see how the comprehensive emergency plan that took over a year to budget and develop works.

Revised figures for visitors to Oregon is now 1.5 million according NPR this AM. Everywhere east of the Cascades is on the verge of conflagration and we've been shrouded in a thick layer of smoke now for over 10 days from the BC and MT fires. We are one thunderstorm from the mega-fires of 2014/2015. When is winter coming?

Areas such as Salem Oregon are expecting traffic jams to start on the Thursday before the eclipse. Locals are preparing to go as long as two weeks without supplies because they're expecting to have so many visitors who will want to buy groceries. Personally, I don't think it's going to be as bad as the predictions because places less than 100 miles away will be outside the shadow area and people will be heading out as soon as the eclipse is over.
Smoke will probably be a hassle for some areas. Mount Jefferson and Sisters areas are both currently dealing with forest fires and heavy smoke that is blowing all the way up to Portland and the Columbia Gorge.
Local radio is suggesting that anyone on the road carry extra food and water and have a full gas tank and a portapotty handy. There could be long waits in high temps. Enjoy the show!

Just a "Heads Up"!!

Amazon is Refunding LEE Solar Eclipse Filter Buyers, Warning Against Use

"According to LEE, all photographic filters for the solar eclipse are designed this way and Amazon might end up pulling them all if they realize this is the case. So the lucky people that ordered from Amazon should be perfectly ok using the filter on their mirrorless camera or with live view. Just don’t try to view the eclipse directly through the filter!"

This means they won't protect your eyes when using an SLR or DSLR camera (when looking through the finder) where the light is passed through the optical system. In the case of mirror-less cameras, where you are seeing an electronic image, it isn't a problem.

LEE is a major maker of filter materials. Many filters are sourced / rebranded LEE filters.

Tribes hope for renewal in solar eclipse; not all will watch

"FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- While much of the country gawks at the solar eclipse, Bobbieann Baldwin will be inside with her children, shades drawn.

In Navajo culture, the passing of the moon over the sun is an intimate moment in which the sun is reborn and tribal members take time out for themselves. No talking. No eating or drinking. No lying down. No fussing.

"It's a time of renewal," said Baldwin, a Navajo woman from Fort Defiance, Arizona. "Kind of like pressing the alt, control, delete button on your computer, resetting everything."

Across the country, American Indian tribes are observing the eclipse in similar and not-so-similar ways. Some tribal members will ignore it, others might watch while praying for an anticipated renewal, and those in prime viewing spots are welcoming visitors with storytelling, food and celebration. For the Crow Tribe in Montana, the eclipse coincides with the Parade Dance at the annual Crow fair, marking the tribe's new year."

I am already outside Columbia, SC at my bro-in-law's place, laptop on lap, beer in fist, shotgun at my side.
The shotgun's not for use on any antiFa "protestors" that might show up.
That's what the dogs are for.
No, my 12-gauge and I are ready for mosquito control.
The zippy bloodsuckers found down here in the Piedmont are sizable enough to make a snatch at you if you aren't careful.
Black Flag & Raid don't work on 'em anymore.
No, just a good load of buck 'n ball and making sure you lead them right.

Anyhoo, Happy "Clipsin' ,folks!

Well I watched the eclipse and I must say I liked it. I didn't go to Nashville so didn't get the "totality" effect and so what. Traffic down there has become horrible on a good day so I could imagine how bad it was on Monday. I did miss a visit to Willie Mae's BBQ in Springfield, TN, they've got the best barbecue anywhere but I'm quite sure they'll be around the next time I head South, which lately seems like never the stick in the mud that I have become.

Anyway, for the eclipse I went down to the park by the lake and got me some of them free eyewears from NASA, mighty white of them to pass them out I must say. I layed myself down in a field and gazed at the whole damn thing, and I liked it. Although I do like the one with the dude's ballsack too. Pretty clever. Was that you, Nowonmai?

Anyways, there's gonna be another eclipse of totality in 7-8 years, right here in my home towns of Little Rock and Cleveland.

Gosh, do ya think that the BFC will still be around then? The Universe is full of wonders.

Glad I didn't spring for the Lee Solar Filter, partly because it was expensive and partly because I just wanted to enjoy seeing the eclipse and not futz around with my camera gear whilst doing so. And I would have chosen a Lee™ because I use their filter system.

The funniest (really odd) thing I read about eclipse victims, were those treated by medical people, for putting sun screen on their eyes to protect them from the sun. People who issue warnings need to mix with more idiots, in order that all, be warned against all things.

Did you see pictures of all the sun damaged photo hardware that made the popular photo sites?

Winning Wildlife Photo Disqualified Because Anteater Was Stuffed

PetaPixel

A winner of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year photo contest has been stripped of his awardī after it was discovered that the anteater seen in the photo is a stuffed animal.

Brazilian photographer Marcio Cabral had won the “Animals in Their Environment” category for the 2017 contest with his photo titled “The Night Raider” (shown above). The photo appeared to show an anteater at a termite mound, and this is what the caption stated:

For three seasons, Marcio had camped out in Brazil’s Cerrado region, on the vast treeless savanna of Emas national park, waiting to capture the termite mounds’ light display. Click beetle larvae living in the outer layers of the mounds flash their bioluminescent “headlights” to lure in prey – the flying termites. Out of the darkness ambled a giant anteater, oblivious of Marcio in his hide, and began to attack the tall, concrete-mud mound with its powerful claws to reach the termites deep inside.

But after the award was announced, someone apparently noticed something strange: the anteater in the photo looked remarkably similar to a stuffed anteater found at one of the entrances of the same national park.

The National History Museum, which owns and operates the prestigious contest, then enlisted the help of five expert scientists to investigate. The team comprised two mammal experts and a taxidermy specialist at the NHM, as well as two external experts (one in South American mammals and one specifically in anteaters).

After comparing the anteater in the winning photo with the stuffed on at the park, all five scientists independently concluded that the two were exactly the same anteater.

They “all reached the same conclusion that there are elements in overall posture, morphology, the position of raised tufts of fur and in the patterning on the neck and the top of the head that are too similar for the images to depict two different animals,” the museum writes.

The museum also asked Cabral to supply RAW files, and the photographer provided photos shot “before” and “after” the anteater photo… with none of the other photos containing the anteater.

“Mr Cabral did provide an explanation as to why he had no other images of the anteater,” the museum says. “He also provided a witness who claims he saw the live anteater.”

“Unfortunately, I do not have another image of the animal because it is a long exposure of 30 seconds and ISO 5000,” Cabral tells BBC News. “After the flashes were fired, the animal left the place, so it was not possible to make another photo with the animal coming out of the place that is totally dark.”

After its “careful and thorough investigation,” the National History Museum announced today that Cabral’s photo has been disqualified and the photographer has been stripped of his prize. The photo will also be removed from the contest’s exhibition and tour.

Cabral continues to strongly deny that photo contains a stuffed anteater.

Update on 4/30/18: This article originally stated that Cabral had presumably Photoshopped the anteater into his scene, but the National History Museum has since informed us that the integrity of the photo isn’t being questioned. Cabral had provided the original raw file for this photo, so the assumption/accusation is instead that he moved the taxidermy to the termite mound for the photo.

Update on 4/30/18: We’ve published a more in-depth look at this scandal and the two photos at the center of it.
