It's hard to figure out what's going on and what's real this early in an event. As always, the international press is obligated to scare the crap out of the entire planet. It'll take a few solid events in the "in other news" category to take the news cycle in a different direction so some accurate stats can work their way to the surface. Right now every media outlet is praying people die en masse so they can make dramatic headlines about it. Lucky for the rest of us, they are easily distracted, so it shouldn't take long for them to cast their gaze elsewhere.

I do think I will pack an extra duffel bag full of surgical masks when I head to Asia next month, however. May be able to cover the cost of my ticket selling those puppies in the airports along the way.

A health care analyst says that the number of coronavirus cases is probably ten times higher than is being reported by Chinese authorities.

Raymond James health care policy analyst Chris Meekins said that the official numbers of those killed and infected by the virus is “really a fraction” of those who actually have contracted the disease due to China’s history of underreporting public health crises.

“Based on conversations I’ve had with individuals both in the U.S. government and more importantly [in China] is that the number that have been reported out of China on this disease are really a fraction of the number of people who have probably had the disease,” Meekins told Yahoo Finance.

Australian scientists have become the first outside China to grow the Wuhan coronavirus, in a breakthrough that is hoped will speed up diagnosis and aid in the development of a vaccine.

Scientists from Melbourne's Doherty Institute used a patient sample that arrived at Royal Melbourne Hospital on Friday to successfully grow the virus, announcing their "game-changing" development on Wednesday morning.

Julian Druce, head of the Doherty Institute's virus identification lab, said up to now health authorities have been using the genome sequence of the novel coronavirus to identify cases.

"Having the real virus means we now have the ability to actually validate and verify all test methods, and compare their sensitivities and specificities. It will be a game changer for diagnosis," he said.

So far Australia has five confirmed cases of coronavirus – four in NSW and one in Victoria. All Australian cases were contracted in China, where there have now been more than 4000 confirmed cases and 106 deaths.

Outside China and Australia, more than 50 cases have been confirmed across 13 countries.

Australians have been advised via the Smartraveller website to "reconsider your need to travel to China overall", and "do not travel to Hubei Province", the epicentre of the virus outbreak.

NSW students who visited China over the holidays have been asked not to attend school, TAFE or childcare services until 14 days have lapsed since they departed China. Major Australian businesses have ordered staff to do the same.

Dr Druce said scientists had been working around the clock since receiving the sample on Friday.

"It's been 10-12 hour days, 2am finishes, so it's been pretty full on," he told the ABC.

The lab-grown virus will now be shared with the Australian network of public health laboratories and expert laboratories working closely with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Europe, Dr Druce said.

It's expected to be used to generate an antibody test, which would allow detection of the virus in patients who haven’t displayed symptoms and were therefore unaware they had the virus.

It will also be used to test the effectiveness of trial vaccines.

Mike Catton, deputy director of the Doherty Institute, credited their success to Australia’s network of laboratories and public health authorities effectively working together.

Scientists at the Doherty Institute have "planned for an incident like this for many, many years and that’s really why we were able to get an answer so quickly," he said.

Gaining some ground with treatment. Looks like lots are getting better on their own, however.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai doctors have seen success in treating severe cases of the new coronavirus with combination of medications for flu and HIV, with initial results showing vast improvement 48 hours after applying the treatment, they said on Sunday.

The doctors from Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok said a new approach in coronavirus treatment had improved the condition of several patients under their care, including one 70-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan who tested positive for the coronavirus for 10 days.

The drug treatment includes a mixture of anti-HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir, in combination with flu drug oseltamivir in large doses.

"This is not the cure, but the patient's condition has vastly improved. From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours," Dr. Kriangska Atipornwanich, a lung specialist at Rajavithi, told reporters.

"The outlook is good but we still have to do more study to determine that this can be a standard treatment."

Chinese health officials have already been administering the HIV and flu drugs to fight the coronavirus. The use of the three together in a cocktail seemed to improve the treatment, the Thai doctors said.

Another doctor said that a similar approach in two other patients resulted in one displaying some allergic reaction but the other showed improvement.

"We have been following international practices, but the doctor increased the dosage of one of the drugs," said Somsak Akkslim, director-general of the Medical Services Department, referring to the flu medicine Oseltamivir.

Thailand has recorded 19 cases of coronavirus. Of the Thai patients, eight have recovered and gone home while 11 are still under treatment in hospitals.

Somsak said the health ministry will meet on Monday to discuss the successful treatment in the case of the 70-year-old but said it is still too soon to say that this approach can be applied to all cases.

"Initially we will apply this approach only to severe cases," he said.

HOT TODDY 'REMEDY' Coronavirus UK – First Brit known to catch virus ‘beat deadly flu with glass of hot whisky and honey’
Exclusive

Nick Pisa

3 Feb 2020, 9:15Updated: 3 Feb 2020, 14:03

THE first Brit known to have caught coronavirus has told The Sun he beat the killer bug with a “glass of hot whisky and honey”.

Teacher Connor Reed, 25, was diagnosed with coronavirus by doctors in Wuhan, China two months ago.

He went to hospital after struggling to breathe and could not shake off a bad cough — all classic symptoms.

Shocked Connor was kept in hospital for two weeks.

Connor, originally from Llandudno, North Wales, has lived in China for three years.

He said: “'I was stunned when the doctors told me I was suffering from the virus. I thought I was going to die but I managed to beat it.

“I used the inhaler which helped control the cough and drank a hot whisky with honey until that ran out.

“It’s an old fashioned remedy but it seemed to do the trick.
CORONAVIRUS BABY BORN IN QUARANTINE ZONE

A Chinese baby boy has been born inside a coronavirus quarantine zone with both his parents feared to carry the deadly disease.

Medics dressed in hazmat suits have delivered the 7lb 11oz boy at Wuhan Union Hospital on Saturday.

The Wuhan hospital's isolation unit, inside the quarantined Hubei province, is the designated national location for pregnant coronavirus patients.

As a result, medics such as Doctor Song have been sent from numerous other provinces to assist with the influx of people.

The new mother has been held in isolation as a suspected carrier of the deadly virus, while her husband remains in quarantine after he was diagnosed.

Pictures from inside Wuhan Union Hospital, one of the facilities on the front line of the viral outbreak in Central China's Hubei Province, show the newborn boy in the arms of Doctor Song Bo.

The doctor said: "The child is healthy and everyone is very happy,” explaining the baby boy would be transferred to Wuhan Children's Hospital for further tests.

He added: "As a father-of-two myself, it's been tough being on the front line day and night, but we're all so excited to see this new life.”

"I believe we will win the fight against this disease."
'REAL GHOST TOWN'

"I did refuse to take the antibiotics the doctors prescribed me because I didn’t want to take any medicines.”

Connor, who moved to Wuhan last summer to teach English, was discharged from the Zhongnan University Hospital in the city.

He added: “It was only when I called back a couple of weeks ago that they told me I’d had the coronavirus.

"I’ve been off work and the boss thinks we will be reopening in a couple of weeks but I’m not so sure.

“Wuhan is becoming a real ghost town — there is hardly anybody in the streets and the shops are running low of fresh fruit and vegetables.

“And there is no medicine or masks left in the pharmacies.

“If you go out without a mask the police will arrest you.

"The authorities are really worried about how to contain this and stop it spreading.”

Connor said the Foreign Office was “disinterested” when he called to say he had been diagnosed with the virus.

He said: “They kept asking if I wanted a place on a flight out but I said no. I’ll stick it out here. I am proof coronavirus can be beaten.”
