In 2016 the Russia boner was worse. Trumpers thought Hilary would "steal the election" and Putin would intervene and install Trump in his rightful place.
The right has been longing for a coup since 2004.

The wider that buffer is, the more secure St Petersburg and Moscow are.

NATO is the biggest threat to that buffer and actively works to reduce it. Vlad actively works to fuck them right back.

One variation or other of this situation has been in play for several hundred years.
