NEW DP EXPEDITION: Kayaking Madagascar's longest river

Postby Ozymandias » Mon Feb 07, 2022 3:18 pm

On 1 May 2022 I am heading to Madagascar with my friend Ben to kayak the Mangoky River from source to sea. As far as I can see, nobody has done this before, so if successful, we will set a new Guinness World Record. Lots of similarities to the Angolan Kwanza River expedition in 2016: we will be raising money for charity, we will be doing it independently, we will be using a Klepper Kayak, and I'll be releasing a book + documentary film about it assuming we get it done!

You can follow along with our 83 days of preparations for this epic adventure on our fancy pants new website: http://kayakthemangoky.com/

On the plus side, no hippos on this river! On the minus side, potential for bandits which we didn't have in Angola...

That is awesome.

I have read the books of the Aussie and Canadian guy who went source to sea on the Amazon and then that river that goes north across Russia. Pretty hard slog. Look forward to hearing your adventures.

Actual travel posts? Great!

Not media savvy enough to help create buzz around this but good luck and have fun.

I know, right? My “travel” has been limited to trips to Oklahoma (family) although I did manage to get away solo and visit the Ben Johnson Museum in Pawhuska last summer. I’m a sucker for dinky independent small town museums. Been to Nashville, going back in a couple weeks (family, but fun family not Oklahoma) where the city acts like Covid isn’t a thing, even though it killed John Prine and Charley Pride.

My daughter & son-in-law planned a trip for us in April …. an “all-inclusive” in the Yucatán. Never done that before but seems like a good idea for a family get-away with my very fun 6 yr. old grandson in tow. I’ll probably do something stupid like slipping away to go looking for toad venom and get caught in a cartel crossfire, but YOLO.

Yea, I think my expedition partner Ben has got hold of a hand line. Really hoping we can catch some fish for dinner each day!

I'm just about to upload a cool timelapse of us assembling the Klepper for the first time actually, watch this space: https://www.facebook.com/KayakTheMangoky/ or my YouTube channel if you're not a Facebook fan: https://www.youtube.com/c/ScafidiTravels
