A friend of mine's kids are moving to Germany once they graduate. They just cannot stand shooter drills and then having people hate their guts for not wanting to get shot.

The problem with the USA is we like shit that is terrible for us. I like guns and cars but man, what a fucking burden to cater to both.

We also have gun myths that we believe, like that oppressive regimes ban guns....Which they do but usually not before filling their supporters with weapons to liquidate opponents.

I even hear, without question, "What's the first thing Castro did after the revolution?" The wrong answer is "Ban Guns" but everyone believes he did, but he didn't. He actually armed the populace to carry out the repression of his opponents. He did this until 1966 when he started to request for the guns to be returned. It was not until about 1980 or 1981 that Cuba got around to firearms laws that are closer to the UK than to North Korea.

For those of you who care, the first thing Castro did was use his influence with the Army to reverse Manuel Urrutia Lleó's banning of Casinos, Brothels and The National Lottery. He did this because there were no jobs in place for all the workers in these industries.

Castro was definitely "Pro Gun" until 1981.

We do seem to be in love with things that make us miserable.

Statistically speaking, those kids are making the right choice if for no other reason than in the United States we love to poison our food supply with industrial chemicals and in Europe, they actually take food safety somewhat seriously.

A shitload more Americans die every year from diet linked diseases than gun violence or mass shootings. Our food industry seems custom tailored to generate cancer.

But I always had a good time and met decent people in Scotland.

Incidentally I sometimes feel that Germans think about their cars in the same way Americans think about guns. One of the parties in the current government recently suggested a uniform national speed limit of - gasp - 130km/h and the result was a bit like telling Americans they can’t own assault rifles. Still, I’ve never heard of someone running amok in a school with a Mercedes so the analogy only goes far.
