Travel Stuff: What do you scan / photograph?

Postby Kurt » Mon Dec 04, 2023 12:42 am

I am prepping for my Nigeria / Togo trip and I gotta scan tons of stuff for the Visa (I gotta prove I can support myself during my 5 hour layover in Lome)

So:

Yellow Fever Vax Card
COVID-19 vax card
Passport
Passport Card

Anything else? Gonna keep them in my email folder in case it is needed later like after a kidnapping or something, but I am going to bring scans of my passport and Yellow Fever as back up. I gotta present Yellow Fever and COVID-19 vax in Lome but I just need Yellow Fever in Nigeria.

I am doing Doxy for Anti-Malarial for Nigeria. But any tips for that area would be appreciated as well.

I get a copy of my passport photo page notarized incase it is lost. City Hall should be able to do it.

What is the malaria situation in West Africa? Falciparum is the dominant strain in much of Africa, if it were Vivax and the risk moderate, I'd be willing to take some risk but Falciparum can kill you fast. I've used Doxy in the past and found it has few side effects other than some heartburn.

My family over there gets it all the time BUTTTT I am not them genetically and if I get it i suspect i am gonna be hurting bad (at best). Lat time I was there I took Doxy and used repellant and was fine.

Butttt....survivors bias? I am seeing a tropical medicine specialist next week and I will take their advice, but it is always good to talk about Malaria and Mosquitoes.

First of all, I am jealous. Sounds like it will be a wonderful trip.

Seeing a tropical-diseases doctor before you travel is a good idea.
Maybe pack some Cipro just in case?
Good plan you’ve laid out for documenting and storing your vaccination data.

Should you get sick while there your wife and family will be well-placed to get you some good medical care. ( Your awesome wife, btw, though I only have had the opportunity to meet her once, she is delightful. Hope to see you two again one day and we can drink expensive Scotch again. What was that we were drinking at the joint in Midtown? Laphroig? )

What is the popular alcohol spirit in Nigeria?

Again, the Cipro. Saved my life once when I got food-poisoning in Damascus. My hotel bathroom was decorated with my shit and vomit, amazing me that it could leave my body with such ferocity and range. I was there by myself, thank god, but it is a little worrisome to get real sick in a foreign place and you don’t speak the language. I did thoroughly clean the bathroom once the Cipro saved my life.

So yah, see a doctor before you leave NY and if you get any new vaccinations give yourself a day of recovery following the shot. I got the shingles & RSV vaccinations a couple weeks ago and boy oh boy I was sick as a dog the next day …. felt like the flu with a sprinkling of existential angst.

I had to get IV antibiotics the last time I was in Nigeria but it was from something I got in Cairo.
I actually have a Doctor in Nigeria and also property in Nigeria (not developed). I keep on forgetting that all i need is a tent and some barbed wire and i could camp in an unfinished housing development.

The preferred Nigerian drink is beer. Its brewed with 40% to 60% millet but it does not have that weird aftertaste of millet beers. Their spirit is "bitters" that taste like jagermeister. Its used as a folk medicine so Muslims and Evangelicals dont freak when it is sold near their Mosques / Churches. But those who are "out and proud" with their booze like Gin and Rum.

I may buy Cipro there but bring it back here. My last bout of food poisoning was caused by movie theater popcorn. From now on I smuggle everything into theaters

I keep a scan of at least one credit card on me too, the whole thing, code on the back, etc... Probably not super secure but has gotten me out of trouble more than once

Do you actually keep them on your phone, or do you just point them to lemonparty.org?

Whois is anonymized now. But there are seldom used whois servers (usually in parts of India and most of Myanmar) that have this big, giant ass caches that give up old data. There its possible to find original names and original nameservers.

The original nameservers often present subdomains when queried and those subdomains that no one thinks anyone can see often have the IP of the true host and that IP can be traced to shared websites where the owner of the secret website also has like A1 WEBDESIGN! The Number One Web Design services for Pig Squeal Arkansas"

That sort of thing.
