Yeah, that video was crazy. Two pilots on board, so I'm thinking they lost power or steering, and losing power would have meant losing steering, especially considering the tide was still falling and close to slack. If they lost steering near the bridge, even full reverse won't be enough. Only way to mitigate that risk is to have tugs take them past the bridges.

I drove that bridge twice a day for 6 months going from BWI area to Dundalk for FEMA Covid work.

Baltimore is a chokepoint for the NE. No hazmat allowed in the tunnels, so the only other option right now would be 695 West, and that's a fuck show on a good day.

Ultimately rebuilding will be fed funded. I'm wondering how lawsuits and restitution will shake out. I know little about maritime law.

My guess is rebuilding will take $4B and 3 years. Probably a few weeks to clear the channel for ship passage.

Typically it's the state (or bridge or port district) who builds roads like these, not the feds. The feds do pay for much of it and the design standards.

And standards have changed since the 50+ years ago that bridge was designed, container ships are like 4x more massive.

So clearly this is a conspiracy. Maybe by the crowd who want think Francis Scott Key should be forgotten for his (extremely minor) role in slavery.
