No joke! That's why I love that Weems & Plath nautical slide rule. No formulas to remember...all you have to remember is to dial in distance first if it is known, then work from there. Takes seconds, and is as accurate as it needs to be.

Huh, so it's like an old-school way to do simple calculus (heh, oxymoron) on a watch. That's pretty neat.

I guess. I only know how to use them for very specific calculations. marie-angelique could probably tell more. I'd like to learn how to use one properly.

Yeah, as I'm sure you know, velocity, acceleration and position equations are all calculus. Differentiations, integrals, etc etc. I've just learned to do them with calculators, not slide rules. The concept that you could do calculus on a watch dial is just incredibly novel for me.

Just picked up a Suunto Core, and plan to put it through its paces for the next month. The thing is huge and looks rather silly on my small wrist, but hopefully it will perform well. Most important functions for me on this thing is barometer and compass, so I'll be curious to see how accurate they are.

i don't know how to use a slide rule.
i am curious about how a watch can "do" calculus.

i have a similar suunto altimeter. a fine instrument, especially for training and very helpful for mountain climbing.

i bought a neck lanyard because the thing is too big for my wrist and i can't find wrist watches under my layers when climbing.

-Light (Indiglo type)
-Alarm
-Day/Date
-Geiger counter

Moon phase and tide table would be nice, but not a requirement.

My Armitron Sport watch had been going strong through much abuse for four or five years.
I like the digital watches with white numbers on a black display. Makes for much clearer reading in the dark.

I have a negative display too, and really liked it once I got used to it. My only issue is that it's difficult to read while wearing sunglasses.

Does anyone own a G shock mudman?..thinking of getting one. They look pretty good, but I don't want a negative display or anything solar powered.

No, but I've heard nothing but good things about them. I considered getting a Riseman before I got the Core, but nobody had one I could try and I didn't want to buy it without playing with it.
