I would recommend the Springfield XD .45

I took it to a tactical course and ran about 2000 rounds through it without a problem. Probably the best 500 bucks I've ever spent.

There are Sig P6s being brought into the country (german police trade ins) that are very affordable. Change out the recoil spring and load its two magazines with federal hydroshocks and you should be in great shape for well under $400.

Maybe find a local range that lets people rent shooters. So you can try different pistols before deciding.

Only the crappiest disposeable autos caused the urban myth that revolvers are more reliable. Sig makes a rugged and reliable weapon.
