I thought you pompous English types would have legislated out the "cold and wet" part of it.... you know, having the servant escort you out to the podium and getting some immigrant from Sierra Leone to put a fox-furred coat on you while you shoot your Holland & Holland 20 gauge shotty at the clay target once, then rushing back into the gun club's lounge for a glass of sherry and some Brighton crab cakes.

No idea whether it was true; all I do know is that this was a failure by the Police to enforce existing procedures and they not only got off scot free but have been sanctimonious cunts ever since about guns (even when they leave their service pistols behind in the ladies when they're tarting up their make-up).

This is good to know, as the liberal wieners go after handguns in Canuckistan. Nevermind that gangstas get a pistol with a high-cap magazine as soon as they flee the halfway house. Enforcement trumps new laws every time.

V shooting sporting clays is loads of fun and has a pretty high degree of difficulty, so in the land of clotted cream it's probably your best bet.

I should have said it's £50 for 5 years so money isn't an issue. The security required is an approved gunsafe secured to a wall or the floor. Depending on quantity and type of weapons then they may look at the overall security of the property such as alarms, deadbolts, metal doors etc. Only the licence holder is allowed to know where the key to the cabinet is held. A nice opld boy was relieved of his licence and his guns when the police called round on a routine check and his little old lady helpfully offered to open the cabinet for the nice policeman. They're nice like that. Still haven't heard whether the PCess who left her pistol in the ladies was subjected to equally stern measures. Probably now works in the Corporate Communications department having been taken off firearm duties.

Generally speaking though the Firearms officers are good guys working to top up their pensions and have learned how to spot trouble a long way off, it's when cases get to political level that silly things start happening and the upper echelons of the fuzz take their cue from the chaotic Home Office - whose agenda to remove shotguns/firearms completely from private ownership is well known. Bizarre really as the Home Office is mostly staffed by third worlders jumping on the Government gravy train - methinks half of them don't like whitey having guns. Especially middle class whitey.

For my money the best reason to go shooting and have guns is through the desire to be out in the wild elements doing what nature intended, gathering what you need for the pot (not having a shit although the two often coincide I'll grant you), anything to get out of this drudgery that modern western man is condemned to endure. If you have no interest in that, unless your location/lifestyle/profession is going to put you into firefights, generally speaking they're more trouble than they're worth in this country.
