Yeah, Yeager has a 'spotty' reputation at best.

Regarding the M4 sucking. It does... but because our armorers are idiots and/or have not enough spare parts, because the guns are worn out, but MOSTLY because sadly our troops are morons when it comes to maintenance. They don't understand their weapon platform very well or don't have the gear/parts to keep it running. So then is it really the gun or the user/maintenance that sucks?

Before you go off, I've fired a thousand rounds in a couple (two) days without cleaning an M4 (yes, a true M4). It had no issues. Neither did any of the other guys with M4s. I know that's anecdotal, but I teach at a school where we have thousands of civilian, mil and LE come through our courses and in the thousands of rifles with sand and fine dust blowing in their actions all day long (some courses get down right windy) and even many guns that are under-lubed we have very very few issues.

Most of the M4 problems come from the extractor tension being weak. The spring and o-ring ring under the extractor need to be replaced frequently (every couple thousand rounds) if conditions are normal. Secondly our troops do NOT maintain their weapons very well. Why, I'm still not sure, because a drunk monkey could maintain it in 2 minutes a day. Lastly, most of the time the guns are under-lubed... like almost dry, this severely hurts reliability in desert climates (like Iraq's sand and dust storms) because it is best to run them 'wet.'

"The M4 carbine is a world-class weapon," said Brig. Gen. Mark Brown

Typical of an officer who sits behind a desk _ “The M-4 works great when I shoot it at my country club range”

These two points make me want to say that the m4 sucks. Pure heathenry.

But seriously, if anyone has a spare upper sitting around I would take it off your hands for real cheap. I'm not above charity when it comes to defending my country.

Word on the street is that the Russian mafia has been funneling contraband to the Saskatchewanian resistance in Medicine Hat. Possibly for a ground invasion into a more hospitable climate.

When I used an M-4 I never had any real issues with it. Keep it lubed, keep it clean, rotate mags, and watch the extractor. When I was in Iraq I would ask what the troops thought of their M-4s. Once in a while I would get a guy that would tell me that his was junk and I would ask where the weapon would pitch the round when fired. Almost without fail I would be asked, "Why does that matter?". After telling them that they most likely had a worn extractor and that they should see about getting a new one they did just that. I do not understand the concept of going to work with a weapon that you know little to nothing about, especially when you may be called upon to use the weapon in defense of your own life. It also boggled my mind to find that troops knew nothing about rotating mags. What are they teaching these kids these days?

The army issued me an M-4 the last time I was in Iraq – it was just barely heavy enough to keep the door to the room where I kept my AK's propped open.

now that we've gotten some of the anti-M4 anger out of our systems...what rifle would be better for in-country ops? AK's? FALs? M14s? =)

I find it hard to believe that the only weapon worth a damn is the HK416 or the SCAR.

hey Q, do you think it's worthwhile getting SEAL-lookalike-stock for the M1A? It's called the EBR mod-0.

this is the one i mean...same one they use, just on the M1A, not M14, natch.

IMHO, God no. Stick with the fixed stocks. Even with the Scout and SOCOM 16.

Q,

Because of your post I have to explain to my wife that this is a guns thread, and that i was not looking at porn. She thought it was funny, and after I explained what was "hail damage" was she laughed harder. I am sooo glad she is cool.
