I had never heard of these weapons; any of you guys ever seen or heard of "gyro-jets"?

Yup in my Geeky highschool days. I actually thought about them the other day, would be real good in a small package because the recoil would be minimal (essentially a tiny rocket).

Read about it just a few days ago in a gun book. Thought of Gene Simmons in the movie "Runaway". Goofy sci-fi movie now, but thought it was great in the day.

Cool idea for guns, I read about Gyrojet burners in SOF a long time ago I think

Some guy that used one in Nam got mud stuck in the barrel so he just fired a round off to clean the barrel out, freaky.

A few hobbyist are trying to bring em back

It's actually too bad that they had such problems with junk ammo - some of the hobbyists that still play around with them believe that they would be as effective as they're supposed to be (i.e. accurate, zero recoil, etc) if the ammo had been decent. But now the gyrojet has mostly missed its chance. Hmm, I think I have some gyrojet owner's webpage bookmarked with some cool stuff, but alas, I'm not on my own computer.

Wouldn't it be a relatively simple step to add a tiny secondary charge, like a mini HEAT round, to defeat most personal body armour?

From what I've read, the Gyrojet pistol was more of a novelty experiment than a real attempt at developing a serious combat sidearm, but I guess every good idea gets pioneered somewhere. The most unique thing about it was the fact that it is the only pistol which fires a round that increases in velocity after it leaves the muzzle, due to the rocket propellant of the rounds.

I think that in the future the most successful experimental firearms (not involving gunpowder) will use magnetic force to propel the projectile with coils. They'll likely be improvements upon the so-called "Gauss" mass-driver guns that exist today.

Guns sure have come a long way since the Ottomans.

I agree, we will be finding batteries and fuel cells in more than just our sights and optics.

Like a handheld Rail-Gun?

I sow a video on YouTube like a year ago of some dude that made a rail-gun pistol – but it didn’t fire at a high enough velocity to make it lethal, but still cool
