Underfolder AK or not?

Postby bearfood » Sun Jan 24, 2010 10:45 pm

So I'm buying a cheap Romanian WASR AK 47, and I'm debating whether to spend a few extra bucks and get the underfolder.

I'm concerned that the folding stock, practical as it may be, will offer a shitty cheek-weld and not be as fun or accurate as the wood stock.

Either way I'm really fucking stoked to add another gun to the arsenal

Any input or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Under folders are less comfortable than a fixed stock AK but , to me, the ability to make it a "shorter package" makes it a reasonable trade off. "Cheek Weld" is viewed differently in different parts of the World as well as expectations........................view the AK as a tool. Don't expect tight groups at 100 meters but hitting a man size target at 300 meters is realistic.

I could'nt edit my first post so I'll add this here.

You may want to opt for the full stock and pick up a Romanian side folder, it takes about 3 minutes to change out.

Right on, I was wondering about the side folder.

I think I may go with full stock, but I am really torn with the decision.

Thanks for the input, John.

I joined theakforum.net last week, and the photo threads are exceptionally awesome. "AK's around the world" I think was the topic of one photo thread, and after viewing that one gets a sure idea of what defines the differing cultural interpretations of "cheek weld." Cool site.

I agree with John O, get a side folder – the wire underfolders are uncomfortable (well, for me)

Thanks for the advice guys. I picked 'er up today along with 100 rounds of Wolf , I should have bought another 100 rounds, too much fun.

I shot the WASR side by side with my M4-gery, and I can see how they both really shine a light.

I think he AK is accurate enough to do some gopher hunting this spring, it' will be in hot competition with my 10-22 at 50 yards or less.

The Tapco trigger in the WASR is great for offhand firing, but left a little to be desired from a rest. I initially thought the trigger was better than my stock AR trigger, it seems way lighter anyway- Different beasts I guess.

Id go the wire sidefolder route. wrap it with parachord and it runs like a dream. Plus the ability to switch back to a full stock with just the turn of a screw was a deal maker for me. Get a Wilson tennis raquet case, fits the sidefolder perfect without screaming "gun".

Yeah I'm happy as a pig in a poke. The AK is soooo easy to bump fire, I was able to get a couple bursts from the shoulder without trying to hard. Sure it's a waste of ammo, but goddamn if it doesn't bring a smile to my face everytime.

I did a little custom work on my M-Forgery this week as well. I swapped out a carbine float tube for a middie

The quad rail is a cheap UTG, and I modified it so it would fit over a low profile gas block. Kind of ghetto, but it was cheap, and the increased weight up front makes a surprising amount of difference in regards to barrel rise, also the extra real estate (+3 inches up front) makes the gun a lot more comfortable to shoot for me. And plus it just looks cooler.

Image
Drilled a couple of holes so I could tighten the gasblock. The design of the cheap UTG rail doesn't allow clearance for a gasblock of any type.

Image
Here I had to file out the inside edges of the top rail so the gas block would fit and allow the BBL to free float.

I just ordered a geisselle SSA trigger for the AR too. I've never shot with a nice 2 stage trigger, should be great fun.

Eh, the ergonomics on the AK sucks in my humble opinion, even the SKS is better. That being said, for me personally, the under folder has the best shoulder feel out of the wire side folder, wood, and under. Haven't tried any of the fancier side folders though.

I have one of the Century imported Yugo under folders...trigger slap like a mofo.
I'd whore myself out just one more time if I knew who to screw to get out of this grind.

In regards to the ergonomics,

As a southpaw You gotta love having the charging handle on the right side, but yeah, I could see how it would suck for everybody else.

But moreover, I am impressed by the sheer violence of the AK in action. It truly is a beautiful thing.

Here's another picture, and a link to a stupid video I made of me learning the in's and out's of AK recoil- First time I've ever seen myself shooting in slow motion!!!

That was cool. It didn't rise that much.
Try putting your lead foot another half-step forward and lean into it a bit.

The sound of the discharge sounds awesome in slo-mo.
