Bad Ass Breaching/Combat Axe Raffle

Postby Hitoru » Mon Jul 19, 2010 6:27 pm

C&P from AR15.Com

For the past few years, Master Bladesmith Dan Winkler has been engaged in a program that directly assists our serving Special Forces Operators. Since the beginning of operations in the Gulf, Dan has been making a "Breaching/Combat Axe” that has become the "signature” of one’s Unit identity and serves as a functional weapon used in the defense of freedom.

As you see, these battle implements are custom made to the specifications of the units who deploy them and become a coveted part of the Operator’s kit. We here at ARFCOM have a long tradition of helping those who serve. With this in mind, we are proud to announce ARFCOM’s "Special Fund for our Special Operators.”

In appreciation of a donation to this fund of at least $10.00, you will be entered into drawing to be eligible to win one of our growing number of prizes (see discussion forum for details including the lamp!). All money raised will go directly to the purchase of these Breaching/Combat Axes on behalf of those Operator’s serving in our most elite units.

This is a unique opportunity for those of us here at ARFCOM to directly assist our forces in combat operations.

Have a friend who is of Norse descent and into making battle axes and specialized weapons. My fave is the brass knuckle with razor-like claws attached to each knuckle. Wicked for slitting throats....I would assume.

The only time I've seen them was in a bar where he was provocatively licking the claws in a fairly sexual manner while gazing at a lovely lass. She smiled.

My heart is now covetous but it's eased by the joyousness of knowing men still carry axes to battle.

In high school metal shop my project was an axe. It was huge, completely made of hardened steel and would cut any of those little sissy things in half with one swing. I think it is sitting in my mom's garage still.

That is back when you could make cool shit in high school. Do they even have metal shop today - if they do, I wonder if "weapons" (which of course many are otherwise known as tools) are restricted?

I don't think they offer metal shop anymore. Maybe out in rural areas where kids may need to know that stuff.

I made a few barbed spear heads so i could "hunt seals" just like the Inuits in the book i was into. Also some 4 pointed throwing stars since that Lee Van Cleef ninja show was hot back then. My shop teacher didn't even blink.

Right after I got out of high school, I opted to work for a while and my first job was as a commercial welder in a UAW factory that built parts for fork lifts and some foam/fiberglass/plastic parts for Cadillac (and other big three) cars.

Well, these guys showed me how to fabricate throwing stars - take (3) single edged razors, situate them into a triangle with the sharp edge outward and spot weld them together. Simple.

This method made BAD ASS throwing stars - that obviously would cut the living crap out of anything soft that they hit.

Winkler makes good axes but $500+ seems a bit crazy. I sure as hell hope he's offering you a discount for bulk purchasing!

Like most art they're nice to look at but the price is stupid.....the one I make this summer will be far cheaper.

The handle on mine was made of 1" dia. solid steel tubing. I would have used 1 1/2" black pipe if I was going to build another one - and maybe I will.

I already have everything I need to build one - Just need to borrow the welder again.

HA HA HA HA - GOOD question!

It could be any oak species in America I guess - and America isn't even limited to U.S.A., technically.

There are dozens of species.

You can get a pretty nice Axe at Home Depot that will split wood and heads for cheap. They even have replacement handles if you break one on someones head.

For a smaller Axe, like a daily carry to the office, I like this one.

There is only one company today that makes a proper axe for the woods and that company is Gränsfors Bruks.
