Self-Aiming Rifle

Postby mapandcompass » Sat Oct 02, 2010 7:16 pm

"A sniper crouches near an open window and zooms in on his target, who sits a half-mile away. He peers through a scope and holds his breath, preparing to squeeze the trigger. But it’s windy outside, and he can't afford a miss. What to do?

A new DARPA-funded electro-optical system will calculate the ballistics for him, telling him where to aim and ensuring a perfect shot, no matter the weather conditions..."

Seems cool, but it raises a question: How far do augment ourselves with technology before we lose the basic skill sets necessary to be effective without our fancy shit? I was not B4; i wonder how actual snipers feel about this stuff.

There is alot of cool stuff that assists a sniper now (range finders, auto rifle dope calculators, comm gear, etc) but do they need to stay just a little Davy Crockett to retain core skills?
You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows

You have an excellent point. It stands to reason that the training programs are still, and probably always will be, founded on the gadget-free principles of wind doping, ballistics tables, and lots of practice. It's simply another tool in the warchest.

How long will it take this tech to make it into squirrel hunting weapons?
