Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm (Yes or No) ?

Postby cowboycraig » Wed Oct 06, 2010 3:33 am

My usual handgun is a Colt 1911A1 Government issue. But is is "heavy" and does not hold a lot of rounds. Also very $$$ to shoot. So thinking a 9mm might be a nicer daily gun, and way more fun at the range. Has anyone had a good or bad experience with a M&P 9mm? I see M&P's mentioned favorably already in the forum. Well sorta favorably, guess they sold out to the man. Glocks just are not speaking to me.

Looks good to me. S&W makes great revolvers, and a little research some time ago made me think their pistols were worth buying, but the deal fell through and I never got back after one. The rail, triggerstop, and rear sight are nice.

If you get one and it proves to have reliability issues, ditch it and try something else. Perhaps try renting one and feeding it a couple hundred rounds before you buy. You'll have your 1911 to fall back on, so it's not like it's your only option

Yes, they are great guns. I have never seen a problem with one. They feed everything. The interchangable backstraps allow you to tailor fit the pistol to your hand. Yeah S&W sold out, but fuck it the M&P is a solid solid firearm. The only issue I have with the M&P's is the takedown. It does require a tool, stored in the bottom of the frame, to take it apart. But hell a solid 1911 requires a bushing wrench, so whatever. Get one if Glock isn't your thing. Maybe in .40S&W though. I've been toying around with getting the M&P 40C, which is their compact model

No problem to get the 1911 bushing off with a pocket knife - field dis/assembly is a piece of cake.

I would no longer purchase a firearm that requires a "special tool" to assemble or disassemble in the field.

9mm = fine all-purpose round that is easy to find almost anywhere.

1911 is a hard to beat platform for everything except weight and firepower (7-8 round mags suck).

Also you might want to check out the Springfield XDM9, no special "tools" to deal with. Lock the slide back, rotate the disassembly lever, remove slide assembly

Just wondering - but why did you choose this gun?

Have been trying different 9mm's at the range. So far like this one best.

But the Ruger SR9 is really nice also

Trying to decide between the two.

Forget the SR9. It has already been through one recall. The recall covered the minor problem of it would fire when dropped. If you are trying to decide between the M&P and the SR9 go with the M&P. The trigger is a lot better on the M&P. Also the trigger on the M&P is very easy to enhance for a lighter pull and faster reset. Ruger revolvers are great but IMHO all of their semi autos are not worth the money spent.

EDIT: if you are trying pistols out at the range do try the Springfield XDM9, just for comparison sake

I just got rid of my issued M&P for a Glock 22, I just did not like the trigger on the M&P.

My next handgun will be a HK P-30. That gun just feels like it was molded to my hand.

It looks like it would.

Just read some reviews. You are not the only person to appreciate the ergonomics. Trigger needs work based on what I have read. I wonder how much case support the stock barrel has?

I hate this.

why can't Santa just drop one of each of all of them into a giant stocking for me, so I can give them all back but one. :-)

Yep. S&W won't see any of my money, even though I love their revolvers.
