Suggestions for Good Cameras For DP Travel???

Postby vetparatrooper » Thu Jan 20, 2011 12:24 am

What do most of you avid and experienced travelers think is the best digital camera to take on the road.....which one will hold up under the abuse that sometimes luggage and what not goes through while traveling to harsher enviironments? I am in the market for a new camera since the old Canon Rebel EOS I had has about had it since I used it during all three tours in Iraq. I am think of getting another upgraded version of that one but I was wondering if all you experienced travelers had some different suggestions. As well the Canon Rebel EOS also is a bit large and with the extra zoom lens it is that much larger; so, I am looking for something that is a bit more compact, can sustain the pummeling that usually takes place when traveling to DP's and also can be hidden a bit better making it harder for theives to know you have a canmera at all., I would also like to have one that has at least a 12 megapixel capacity and can also take at least short live action videos. So if there are any ideas let me know.
Ahead of time -- Thanks for any information you give -- I am sure this has been covered here before but I am too lazy to browse through all these threads and some of them are probably a couple of years old anyway so I am sure there is better stuff out there in this day and time. I am not a great phtographer but I am pretty decent. I went to the inauguration of Obama (I got tickets along with a couple of other wounded vets and so I got pretty close to the Capitol Steps and also got some pretty great pics of the Inauguration parade....if anyone wants to see them I can email them to you or you can see them on snapfish -- i can give you the email and password to access the pics if you want to.

Anyway, I am looking for a new DP travel camera and would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have.

I am pondering exactly the same question. I had a lovely small Olympus that survived the jungles around Chiang Mai and the Tet water festival, partying in Nana, foot crossings to Burma and Cambodia and even being stolen and recovered in Phnom Phenn. Total, 5 months of abuse with lots of scratches but pefect functioning. Man, I loved that camera.

I recently lent it to my step daughter for a weekend trip to Jeju island with her buddies. It came back totally fucked. No good deed goes unpunished...

So, I'm in the market too.

It depends
When we were in Somalilind the giant camera guys attracted all sorts of attention whereas I had a dark green Fuji Finepix that no one even noticed.
Several of the Canon pocket digitals are superb as well.

after all, the exspurts are all supposed to be rye-cheer on this here forum!!!

we've come to the conclusion here that it doesn't matter how long you've been in-country or how often you've been shot

I really like the Canon S95. It's small, takes amazing photos and decent video and fits in a shirt pocket. I would get this over the bigger Canon G11/12. Quite a few teams that I have worked with use them and its just so damn nice not to lug around around a full size DSLR. Get it, seriously.

Any camera is fine - I have used expensive ass pro cameras to 50 buck digital to my cell phone camera - there isn't really a specific "adventure" camera - just use what you have

www.dpreview.com

I am shooting with a Canon 500D with an image stabelizer and am quite happy, it is an entry level DSLR. Before I had a Canon A710 with a built in image stabelizer, it also took good pics, some are posted in the photo section. If you take to drink and dope get the image stabelizer as it makes up for all the stumbelling about while wasted.
Im reallly fuclimg pissed but fespite that I can still hit a tarfet at 1000m plus. mayVRVe bnot tonight but it qint beyond the wit if man. Nowhammy.

Well this is the one I went ahead and ordered this morning. It seems like a decent little camera and it is compact enough not to be noticed too much by anyone who might want to lift it off me. So, i am happy with the purchase although I am sure there will be many who will say I made a Baaaaad choice......but oh well I got sick of waiting for advice (I am a bit impatient at times and a little too head strong as well) so I went ahead and orderd it this afternoon. It should work for at least one leg of the trip anyway wherever I end up going.

I have the S90 (earlier version of the S95) and it works very well. Only very small downside is a slower shutter speed (common to pocket cameras) if doing action shots but otherwise works great. I have had a couple shots from it published recently.

JITW -

Yeah i always have a good camera on my cell phone....the one i currently have is 3 megapixels and also takes shirt videos too....but I usually take ALOT of pictures when traveling so I figure the little HP camera I went ahead and ordered yesterday will be good for that....I can store alot more on a regular camera than I can on my cell phone.
Anyway thanks for the information JITW and to everyone else too.

Oh I willl...I will not be going anywhere until Spring. I am looking into Sierra Leone and posssibly Cote D'Ivoire but I also met a guy who lives here now but lived in Russia as a mechanical engineer for twenty years and he has good contacts in Kazakhstan, and a few places throughout the Ukraine....might even be able to get me close to Chechnya by getting me into Dagestan because he knows some people there as well) I will have to wait and see how the money situation is but I should be all good to go to some place cool by late Spring and I will have my compact laptop with me and will be able to post from the road as long as I can find Wi-Fi hotspots occassionally.
Oh yeah and I just got the little camera today and it is so small and takes some nice shots so far..and the video it takes is pretty good quality...I took a few minutes of video of my Boxer Dog playing in the snow and I am now editing it and willl be postinng it on youtube....Just so people can see my dog is a complete nutjob and how she jumps around like she is on a pogo stick...Anyway I did not realize the camera would be as small as it is but that is really the feature I most wanted (The Canon Rebel EOS I deployed to Iraq with was great but it was too big and got on my nerves alot of times just because of its size especially with the extra zoom lens so I am pretty happy with the purchase of this smaller more compact camera and it still takes 12Megapixel pics like my old Canon Rebel did (I think the new Rebels take up to 18 megapixel shots or something like that but mine was one of the first ones that came out)

....By the way when I do take pictures and I want to upload them on this site what do I do just put them in my snapfish album online and then post them on here with the URL thing and then use the IMG function? Because I have not figured out how to post the pics that are simply stored on my computer...I have a few goood ones from Iraq and was going to share them but I do not know how to upload them here from my own computer and have not put them on snapfish because some of my relatives have access to those albums and some of those pics might be a little hard for them to take....Actually I do not want to upload the more graphic ones here either but I have some other good shots that you all might find interesting...so can I upload directly from my computer or do I need to go ahead and put the ones I want to post in my snapfish album???....As well, snapfish is the only place I have ever used to store photos online so will that work here?? Or do I need to find some other place to store my photos in order to be able to upload them to post them here??? If anyone can edumacate me on how to do that I would be very grateful.

Later.

Dustproof, shockproof, waterproof to 10m and no extending zoom barrel (it's a periscope arrangement which moves internally). Tape the shiny parts with tape and you''re good to go.

I've never been in a real DP, but i'm guessing AC isn't always forthcoming. Thus, a major consideration for extended stay may be the ability to use AA batteries, which are the only ones I would assume could be found nearly anywhere. Otherwise make sure you buy extra's for the camera's rechargeables.

It would also make sense to have the smallest possible storage cards (you could use micro-sd with the SD adapter) since there could be times you would want to hide cards in your luggage or body. The latter option in particular would make the advantages of using a micro-sd rather than the larger SD quite apparent.
