Remington 870 or Mossberg 590

Postby Tirador » Thu Apr 07, 2011 1:02 am

Trying to make another choice here. I'm looking at the "tactical" model of each.... I don't have much of a grip with my left hand, and so will install a velcro loop on the forend, and a knoxx recoil reduction stock. I do want to add a light, though I've never had much success with the shotgun light kits. I'm thinking one mounted on the trigger guard might work well for me.

I hear suc good things about both brands that it is hard to decide. Any thoughts? (besides get one with the numbers still on it:)

I would go with the 870 cuz it has the cheapest after market accessory's

Have you ever fired a shotgun with a knoxx recoil reduction stock all day long? I would suggest that you do that before buying one

I wish I could fire a knoxx before purchase, but I live in the sticks. I have shopped at one place a lot, and they'll almost always accept a return from me, so I am not too worried.

What do you consider the indispensible add-ons?

Nothing - the 870 is fine with a wood stock and pump - but I was guessing that you were like most gun people and liked to put a bunch of shit on your gun to make it look cool

Have both and like both. I find next to no difference in the price or availability of accessories where I live but then I keep mine basic. The 590 versions come with some nice ghost ring sight options that cost extra depending on what 870 version you buy. Even if you put a rail & red dot etc. on it an included set of beefy ghost ring rifle irons is nice (co-witnessing may be an issue with the stock set though.)

Oh yeah the 590s can also come stock with a bayonet mount. Useless but scary looking, it costs extra on the 870.

I went with the 870. All furniture was black on it. I did purchase a sling and a bayonet mount (that scary factor is important:) The model I bought came with the magazine extension. It was significantly less expensive than the Mossberg (enough to cover the sling and bayonet mount). I'd still like to add a flaashlight at some poimt.

Damn, but there are a lot of add-ons available. Many of them look like crackerjack prizes, while a few appear to significantly improve performance.

Don't forget - it isn’t a gun until the accessories weigh more than the gun itself

I don't think a light on the trigger guard is your best option. It's pricey but the surefire foregrip is a win for lighting, also they have some lights that mount between the barrel and mag extension. I have the Knox spec opps stock. If you shoot it with impropper form you will get lots of cheek slap and a possible black eye. The standard stock with a few rounds in it is a good idea. With training you can shoot slugs one handed with the standard stock. Save some coin and get the magpul shotgun DVD learn how to use it to it's fullest extent then think about what you would like to add and how it will help. What works best may not look the best.

Also my vote is 870 all day long

I'm not really following how a trigger guard light would work, seems awkward sounding. Anything with cords etc sticking out screams "tangle me" on transitions, keep it slick and if you actually need a light buy a proper slide mounted one. "Tactical" shotguns are only really good for opening doors IMHO. Give me a proper rifle any day if you have work to do, your fighting light should be on your carbine. If its just for fun, do what you think looks cool.

Ever since you showed a picture of that Tromix, most other shotguns seem worthless.
