which knife. We use German D2 for the HEST/F, Sliepner and Niolox for the HEST II and HEFT, 1095 for the HEST Original

I go to Alro steel and pick up a chunk from the extras pile on the cheap, make a fire with hard maple get her cherry red and quench it in a saltwater solution.

Another good source: go to a metal recycling yard and look for h.d. leaf springs for trucks. That is solid knife steel.

Word.

Cut yo mama.

Old files are good to go. Heat them up in a big fire and get to work with the grinder etc.

nothing wrong with that. Whatever works. But if you need to make more than a dozen knives the steel has to be consistent by batch and matched to specs and temper.
