I think this is an even better illustration of World light pollution. Also light pollution maps for the US and several other countries.

It really is a system loss, like the friction of your engine parts reducing your gas mileage, or heat from your light bulb (old incandescents turned something like 2/3rd of their energy into heat and only 1/3 into light.). Its just burning up energy for no reason. This has real costs like increased energy prices, especially when there are alternatives such as directional lighting.

There is a really annoying light next to a road that shines right into my eyes when i drive it during the dark winter months here in Iceland this thread has given me the courage to go and take it out with a riffle.

It's a chav thing, you wouldn't understand.
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.
