Any Amateur Radio BFCers Out There?

Postby nanuq » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:04 pm

I just got my ham radio licence and I thought I'd ask if any of you would recommend what kind of handheld equipment I should buy. Just something in the VHF/UHF range that would be useful in an emergency.

You could take a look at Yaesu's VX 5/7/8 series. Waterproof to 3m.
Be nice to me. I'm a rug muncher.

how much of a pain is it get the license in Canada? I'd like to get a VHF/UHF for the jeep.

For VHF-UHF, all that you need to do is pass the Basic exam but there's a fair amount of information covered on that. A lot of the stuff you have to know is covered here:

Call me Rubber Duck.
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.

Was that a poultry attempt at humour?

The Yaesu VX-8DR is a spendy HT, but is excellent for starting out. The US Version is a quad-band (6m,2m,1.25m,70cm) dual-receive (tri with AM/FM) with built-in wideband and APRS. Add the GPS unit and you have position reporting. Do the mod and you also have a marine radio and FRS/GMRS/MURS/PMR/KDR (in countries that allow such things, of course ;)

Watch your power levels when working mods, 73s.

Oh, the VX-8DR is submersible as well :)

EDIT: Oops, didn't see this up there, sorry!

That is cool, Nanuq. I never did Amateur or HAM, but I think its cool for those who have. I might be messing with one of those radios unlicensed soon. :)

Before any of y'all experience serious RF burns, just get your ticket.
It's not hard.
