Magnesium stick that fits into HEST's

Postby Kurt » Tue Aug 07, 2012 5:05 pm

handles (I have the first edition HEST) and I was trying to find a fire starter that was made of magnesium to fit into the HEST handle to go along with my dental floss and fishook.

Any ideas where to get one or any plans to make one?

this one will fit with some small, hack saw/sanding trimming. Speaking of hack saws I always use a small piece of one for the steel striker vice the ones they sometimes come with and it may even have alternate uses as... a small hacksaw. BTW trim the ignitor rod carefully lest you start the whole mag block on fire. I used a non-metallic dremel cutting wheel for speed.

A ferro rod rubber banded to the sheath may be a smaller option. I use bicycle tire tubes cut into bands for securing mine or just buy a blank and shove it in the handle.

Thanks for the tips.

What I did though was this:

bought a cheapo magnesium bar.

shaved off some magnesium onto some cling wrap.

made about pre-shaved magnesium bindles and put them in the handle.

dental hygiene is very important in the woods.

My advice is to carry your firestarter outside the knife and use the handle to store little sharp things like fishhooks, needles that tend to get lost or poke holes.

That is ideal and in reality my firestarter is 10 bic lighters in ziplocs and second hand tupperware also filled with rubber strips, steel wool and some cotton balls. But I walk around with my knife more often than my tupperware box so I figured I would make it so I could start a fire if my taxi cab crashed and left me stranded on a mysterious island.
