I have tons of experience leading up to this. I wear sandals loosely or go barefoot all the time, so I didn't have to worry about ankle support. I've also recently crossed three continents by bicycle in sandals, mostly without socks. One thing that set me on this path is wilderness survival training (
Boulder Outdoor Survival School). Several of their instructors would walk through the desert in simple handmade sandals.
I guess I would recommend transitioning away from footwear that supports your calves and ankles and trying to go barefoot as much as possible.
I have a pair of Vibram five fingers which I don't think I'm going to use much. Would probably be a good place to start for a traditionally shod runner.
Also, as one site I found mentioned, the technique is different. Lots of runners heel strike which causes problems as it is. There is a technique called
Chi Running which stresses leaning forward with the upper body and landing either flat footed or on the balls of your feet instead of the heel. This reduces stress on your joints.
Be nice to me. I'm a rug muncher.
