Pistol suggestion that is compact & still with stopping powe

Postby Diode » Sat Jan 19, 2013 1:53 am

I'd like to know of a good pistol I can use that is compact, light and has good accuracy and good stopping power.

A well-known brand name would be good and something that is known to be reliable.

Mostly I'll be traveling in a 4WD in a difficult place that is hot and humid and I'll still want to carry it on me.

Whatever is the pistol I'll be seeking training by someone qualified.

how much $ you wanna drop? any .45 cal ACP compact (double action) also ain't bad. friend of mine who works for uncle sam's "acme import export company" packs a hk 45c. have fired it. handles well. he had the a prior.

Stopping power is relative to what you want to stop....human, bear, or rhino? Are you concealing this firearm? I would suggest a Glock 19....reliable, holds 15 rounds of 9mm, relatively light, and not too bulky to conceal. If you might encounter something with a thicker hide I would suggest a larger caliber like a .45 acp or 10mm. The keys to defense are shot placement (your training) and reliability (the gun). Whoever said 44 magnum thinks your hunting grizzlies....it's not compact or light at all. Good luck.

I would go Glock 10mm unless the ammo is too hard to find. If so I would go .45 in any Glock or 1911 style frame. If you are in the third world you typically end up with a Tokarav which is a 7.62x25mm known for punch. Worst case...just keep a tire iron under the seat. Punch is a function of where you hit someone. A .22 short in the eyeball works just fine.

Glock 19 with Winchester Ranger 147 gr jhp+P+ ammo, I've been carrying this for 5 years. Combine this with a Kramer #3 iwb in horsehide and and you're good to go, get some good defensive handgun instruction.
I recommend adding Trijicon night sights and a Vickers extended mag catch.
This pic was taken shortly after I was caught in a flood swolen river, I was swept about a hundred yards and bounced off of several rocks. The holster retained the Glock perfectly

I like the Glock 29 my self. 10 rounds of 10mm in a fairly light weight package. Its my knockabout gun.

It all depends where you are travelling and what you think you may need to "stop" Up here I would go with a S&W Model 329PD Alaska Backpacker .44 mag. We have a lot of grizzlies up here so that is the smallest caliber I'd go. Sadly, we can't even carry handguns in the bush so compact with stopping power means the smallest 12 gauge you can get.Thankfully, we do get a lot of choices there. If Black bears and cougars are your concern, then the 10mm would be a good choice, or .357 mag revolver. No bears, a compact .45 would be a good choice (HK45c, glock 30...) IMHO

Glock 30
10 rounds of .45 in a compact. Accepts G21 mags as well.

My gun is a .45 Colt but, it is a lot of gun. My wife is very comfortable with her 9mm Beretta 92. I paid $625, but now they're about $150 more. Still in your range. Before you keep a loaded gun in the house, train your child to never touch and, being your first pistol, never pull in on someone unless you're going to touch the trigger immediately. Otherwise, you'll loose custody of it and that is bad. You live in an apartment I see. If you shoot indoors, the bullet will go through the wall and keep on going, whether you hit your target or not. Be super careful!
