VPN - Recommendations?

Postby Chimborazo » Thu Feb 14, 2013 10:01 am

It looks like I'll be moving to Bahrain in a month or two and would like to get a VPN connection for a variety of reasons. I have zero experience with VPN outside of using it to access corporate networks. Any suggestions?

What about these types of things? All I need is to be able to access geographically blocked sites, mostly for video streaming and VOIP.

You might have trouble getting bandwidth for audio/video unless you have a really good connection. Try Skype for phone calls. I use Google Voice for texting. Try a couple of the VPN providers and see what works best.

You keeping your home connection up? use that. You should be able to set up a tunnel to your router and browse from there.

Or else you should be able to use a VPN service.

OK, tell me what kind of system you have (operating system like Windows 7)

and then tell me what kind of home router you have.

If you do not have your own network to sponge off of then I suggest you just buy software and a service for your laptop and forget about it. You should be able to find what you need here:

https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/

or not, because to be honest I could not bother to read it.

But for your own VPN I am just going to assume you have Windows 7 and access to a linksys router.

First go to DynDNS.org and register and configure everything. Choose your current IP for the IP to use. you can choose mail or not (I would not bother)

In your linksys router go to Setup and DDNS and select DynDNS.org from the dropdown menu. Add your username and password for your DynDNS.org account you just registered for. Be sure the setting is on "Dynamic" and for hostname you add something like chimborazo.dyndns.org and for mail exchange I would try to leave it blank. Then click "update" and "save settings". By choosing dynamic, it makes it so your VPN always stays on even if your IP addy changes.

Then go to your computer >> Start >>Search "VPN" and hit enter. Enter the domain name you just set up at dyndns.org so chimborazo.dyndns.org or getaprodude.dyndns.org then select don't connect now and you should have it as an option for whenever you want to connect.

You should be able to goof around with it at home before you leave and test.

Now if you want to set up a box to connect just via IP in case the Emir of NoPornistan blocks DynDNS.org you should be able to do that as well but you might need an always on computer at home to configure your vpn.

This would be a good solution for that

Palm sized server, with almost no power usage. Toss Ubuntu server on it and set up your own home VPN or leave it at a friend's house for when you are away.

Or use it as a data collecting creeper box while at work. Either way small computers kick ass, and that alone makes me want to make you get one.

HA! Someone still wants to hit up Youporn while in the B-Hizzy

Bahrain back in the late 90s was a cool place - I used to fly there for the weekends to party, now on the weekends it is zillions of Saudis getting smashed drunk and banging Ruski whores. Anyway, have fun

Also, if you use the AOL browser you can go to anywhere on the net - I learned that in Qatar, it is a proxie or something

AOL used to generate a new random IP every time a user logged on. It was, in effect, a proxy. There was a time when it was shut down; But now its appears it could be activated Here are instructions if it no workie:

http://surfanonymously.blogspot.com/2010/11/use-aol-proxy-for-internet-explorer.html

According to the ramblings AOL may still be available to proxy but some sites and ISPs may block or websense it. Also, you should check with your employer policies. My hospital websenses like Stalin. Hacking websense is not that hard BUT if you get caught doing so on company computers its immediate termination.

AOL dialup used to be the best thing in the world to use to break into computers or creepy stalk someone. They used this massive mainframe called a Himalaya back in the day that ran their very massive modem bank. But they never logged calls. Disk space was too expensive then so every call made to every AOL modem was forgotten. No IP addies were logged either. I know this because I was once hired to pursue a creepy old dude who had zero computer skills, used only AOL and I never caught him. Never even had a clue who he was because he was so "low tech" and under the radar. I called the Modem Monkies at AOL and they basically told me I was screwed but were nice enough to give me a clear and concise answer as to why i was screwed. They even said that their calls with the FBI went like this:

FBI: We want you to try to associate this ip with a phone number.
AOL: We can't. We don't log anything.
FBI: We want you to start logging everything to help us find terrorists.
AOL: FUCK YOU! WE ARE AOL BITCHES!!! WE BOUGHT FUCKING TIME WARNER WE CAN DO WHATEVER THE FUCK WE WANT!!! WE WILL BE AROUND FOREVER!!!!
FBI: We welcome our dial up internet access overlords.

So if AOL does the proxy thing, then yah, use it. AOL never rats out anyone.

Thanks, Kurt. I might just try that if I end up moving, and if I do try it, expect to hear from me!

Damn, I heard they were starting to invade on Thursdays also - didn't know they were up to Wed now - the worst part is the B-Rizzy used to be a really fun place - but the last times I hanged out there you were 50% guaranteed to get into a fight with some drunk Saudi if you hit a Bahrain bar - 1000000% guaranteed if you are out with attractive female friends

So I got a new Mac today and bought Hide My Ass VPN Pro. Seems pretty cool, but I guess the real test will be when I get over there. Has anyone used it?

"Hide my ass" doesn't sound like a very professional VPN company...

Don't use PPTP, use something OpenVPN compatible.

If you want to use a standards-compliant VPN client on OSX, the software I recommend is Tunnelblick:

https://code.google.com/p/tunnelblick/

StrongVPN is a good service provider:
