Qatar Airways to introduce live TV by end-year.
June 29, 2005 – QATAR Airways plans to start rolling out live television services aboard its Airbus A330s following an agreement with European engineering specialist Lufthansa Technik announced earlier this month (Inflight Online, June 15).

Qatar CEO Akbar al-Baker describes live television as a product initiative that would further differentiate the airline from its competitors. “We continue to look at ways to improve our service levelsand, by offering a variety of entertainment options, to set new standards of comfort to ensure we are the airline of choice.” Qatar will be one of the first international long-haul carriers to offer passengers live inflight television; Singapore Airlines is about to introduce a Connexion by Boeing-based service.

Under a soon to be signed contract worth an estimated $50 million Lufthansa Technik will install Rockwell Collins’ Tailwind 560 direct-broadcast satellite (DBS) inflight television system in Qatar’s Airbus A330 fleet, integrate it with the existing Panasonic 3000i audio/video-on-demand inflight entertainment system on the aircraft, and support its introduction into service.

The contract is at an advanced stage of negotiation and is likely to be signed in the next few weeks. It covers retrofits on the 15 or so A330s already in Qatar Airways service; the remaining 15 aircraft still to be delivered will be line-fitted with the installation engineered by Lufthansa Technik.

Contract signature will be the green light for five months of engineering design and fabrication work, followed by a 25-day campaign to obtain an FAA supplemental type certificate for the installation. The in-service A330s will then be retrofitted in Hamburg at a rate of one every ten days.
