SN Brussels' Marketing Spin on Flights to Monrovia

Postby SRR » Sat Jul 23, 2005 3:52 pm

I didn't expect SN Brussels Airlines to actually have 'destinations guides' for attractive places like Monrovia. But I suppose every airline has got to sell tickets somehow to the undecided-summer-vacationers crowd....

Monrovia

Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, is one of the rainiest places in the world. But there are also a number of popular beaches and sights.

The city has suffered greatly as a result of the heavy fighting that has occurred here during the last few years.
But it is not all pain and suffering. Monrovia has some magnificent sights. For example, there is Providence Island, which is a place with a long history. This was where the first freed African slaves returned to their homeland. It is a site of great historical importance for the people of Liberia. Traditional dances and concerts are also frequently held there.

Other attractions include the Waterside Market and the National Museum. You can buy beautiful African batik goods and woodcarvings in the Waterside Market, which is held in an old area near the centre. The National Museum is known mainly for its collection of old Liberian art.

Wow, this first paragraph has really got me excited about taking the wife and kids backpacking through Angola!!

Angola

Wooden masks and figures

Two million refugees, a devastated infrastructure, poverty and thousands of landmines: Angola has been suffering from a civil war for almost 30 years now. Fortunately, peace has now been restored to some extent.

Angola is in southern Africa and has a tropical climate. There are actually considerable differences in the climate between west and east and north and south. In Luanda and the region to the north of the capital, which has the most visitors, the climate is stiflingly hot and humid between November and May. The best time to visit this region is therefore from mid-May to October, when the climate is dry and relatively cool.

In Angola, you can encounter a diversity of wild animals: lions, hyenas, elephants and antelopes. Apes, hippopotamuses and crocodiles are also indigenous to this country. In the Namib Desert, which is situated in the south-west, you can find the tumboa, a unique plant with two wide leaves that are several metres long and lie on the ground of the desert. You will certainly want to bring back a wooden mask or another kind of wooden figure as a souvenir.

Luanda
Luanda, the capital of Angola, is on the Atlantic coast. It has beautiful beaches and a number of sights.

he sights to be found in the centre of Luanda include a Military Museum, the National Anthropological Museum and Roque Santeiro, a huge open-air market. Funtogo market, which is just outside the city, is Angola’s biggest arts and crafts market. Every Sunday, the market is transformed into a truly popular festival by musicians and dancers in local traditional costumes.

The Slavery Museum is about 25 kilometres from the centre of Luanda and contains objects and documents from the time of the slave trade. It is estimated that 3 million slaves were shipped from Angola.
