Suggestions for Haiti?

Postby Silver550 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 4:44 am

I've got a flight booked to Port-au-Prince next month and I was wondering if the BFC had any suggestions on things to see and do in Port-au-Prince and Haiti in general.

For example, I've heard that it is possible to watch voodoo ceremonies in Haiti and would love to watch one, but I have no idea how to go about setting that up. Also, does anyone know of a good fixer in Port-au-Prince?

Suggestions or advice from the BFC community would be most appreciated...

Oh, and I'm used to getting sick and getting robbed when I travel, so I don't need tips on how to do that in Haiti since I seem to have gotten pretty good at that on my own.

Hi sonnydae -

I was browsing the travel forum and noticed that you had asked me about my Haiti trip... In terms of sheer dysfunction and backwardness, I've never seen anyplace like it. You can't go anywhere without worrying about getting mugged or murdered, infrastructure has collapsed outside of secure hotel compounds, you see things like a guy pulling a dead rat out of a pile of garbage and consuming it right by the side of the street, you see cemeteries where the dead have been unceremoniously yanked out of tombs and dumped on the ground so that the living might occupy the tombs, you see overcrowded street markets where you can literally buy anything, etc.

In other words, it was a great trip...

I'm not trying to self-promote, but I posted pictures and stories (a trip report) on my web site if you are interested.

The cemetery I described:

Port-au-Prince with the rat scene I described, collapsed infrastructure, markets and more:

Petioville, more markets and almost getting murdered outside of a refugee camp:

I think the above are the highlights, but if you're really interested in Haiti, I posted all of the Haiti stuff here:

Cheers.
