Namibia 12/30/11-1/20/12

Postby svizzerams » Wed Dec 14, 2011 1:02 am

I'll be spending New Year's Eve in Terminal 5 @ Heathrow between Seattle and J'berg/Windhoek. Oh yeah I know how to party - I "lost" my birthday to the international dateline two birthdays ago between Seattle and Chiang Mai.....

So any flaggers hanging around Terminal Five 12/31/11 - I'll buy ya a beer.

I have adequate deterrents in place...strategic, tactical deterrents ;-)

So I came back alive from Namibia - although the jet lag is still lingering

This is where I went:

My route:

Ways I got around:

Image

First experience with right hand drive vehicle - the shifting. using a clutch again was easy, using the signal blinkers placed on the opposite side less so - although eventually I wasn't turning on the windshield wipers to make a turn. I still found myself moving to the "left" side of the car to get in to drive. But more disturbing is now that I am home I still find myself pressing on the clutch and finding a brake instead.

Places I stayed

Sossousvlei - area of the highest sand dunes in the world - very dramatic at sunrise/sunset.

Image

Image

Erongo Mountains - interesting landscapes of collapsed caldera from an ancient volcano, rock paintings, rock hyraxes

Image

Etosha National Park / Ongava Game Preserve - in front of "my" tent the first night was a territorial dispute between competing prides of lions....

Image

Image

Image

Rhino Camp It was here that Chris Bakkes, a South African guide/author, who was the manager of this region for Wilderness Safaris, told me he had friends in Seattle who came to visit every year. Later one of the guides told me his friend was Paul Allen. Chris had his arm "taken" by a crocodile in Kruger Park. He also recites a mean "Man From Snowy River" around a campfire.

Image

Skeleton Coast - Most incredible landscapes ever - more pictures to be posted of this area.

The shots of the "dead tree landscape" are striking. They actually look more alive than any of the other shots.

I actually traveled all the way to Namibia, inspired by these "dead" trees...which are well and truly dead...and have been dated to be about 900+ years old.

Bitchen pics again Svizz. The landscapes are awesome and make me wanna get on a plane and head back down there. What kinda camera are you using?

I used 3 different Panasonic Lumix - a DMC-ZS7; a DMC-ZS10, and a DMC-LX5. The first two have GPS tagging - which is great for later to pinpoint where the pics were taken.
