Somewhere funny in the eastern hemisphere

Postby Bored » Sun Jan 01, 2012 1:02 pm

Any advice? Somewhere funny, funny being a shithole in some third world country. You get the idea. Isn't ´ there any bucket list for those places?

I live i Norway, so places like Baghdad is closer than Tijuana. I was thinking about 2-3 weeks. Probably going alone, don´t know anyone stupid enough to follow. Might be persuaded into joining someone from the Café, departing around the Easter holidays. Served in the navy, 5 years experience in SAR, tech diver with 500 dives, tech. high school grad. in electronics and telemetry. I might be useful.

Sudan is always nice... And it is a timely destination with the recent creation of South Sudan. You can observe events on the border firsthand.

Thanks for the advice, sounds good. I´m guessing places like Iran is less exciting then Sudan then? On the other hand it would be interesting to write an article on how these places are now that the U.S. has packed their bags and left.

Depends on what you're looking for. "Third world shithole" covers a lot of places and "fun" is relative. Eastern hemisphere covers a lot of places. What exactly are you interested in? How long of a flight can you stand (and/or how much you willing to pay)? Afghanistan is in the eastern hemisphere as is Jakarta but there's a bit of a difference there.

And whilst I´m at it; What do you guys bring to these DPs? And just how D is these Ps? Is Sudan just a hellhole warzone, or is it a normal city in there? Can´t go walking around in Scottvest-ish clothing in the nicer places. Might look suspicious.

Plan for what to bring:

E&E bag; Water, FAK, rain-poncho, Zippo lighter, batteries, 50 ft of paracord, GPS, hard cash, cigarettes, energybars, babywipes
Other: Camera and lenses
Wear: LL bean fieldcoat W/O inner-lining, t-shirts, scottvest khakis, some low key shoes(palladium-ish), normal khaki chinos, brown brouges, sunglasses(Ray-Ban Aviator) and suitable amount of wool socks and underwear.

Figured i buy the rest like a couple of informal shirts and a shemag or some kind of protective head and neckwear, toothbrush, toothpaste and shampoo and stuff.

BTW; Meds; Bring or buy?

Something I should remove or add?

EDIT:

Thanks for the response guys

Flight time is care, but price is more important, so hard-to-get-to-places witch is very expensive is out of the question. Thinking flight cost at max $2500(remember, I am traveling from Norway, not US)

Thinking 2-3 weeks.

I am interested in seeing the world, nothing very specific, but I´d prefer some dangers. I am not riding a donkey through a firefight, but something exciting. I´ve had basic military training and know how to handle a firearm and I have the paramedic medicine courses so I am not completely lost. I was thinking something like an unstable area, with the possibility to find somewhere decent to sleep and stack gear every night or so. Prefer warm weather(kinda cold in Norway...)

Not my objective for this trip, but a nice sum up; When somewhere asks where I´ve been, I expect to be called crazy.

You should be able to get to most places for less than $2500, even from Oslo. I really have nothing better to do right now and enjoy looking this shit up so here's some possible ideas.

Since you seem to have a pretty broad criteria, I just typed in "flights from oslo" in Google. Here is the abridged version of non-stop flights from Oslo:

To Duration Airlines

Agadir, Morocco 5h 5m Norwegian - Morocco isn't really a DP but you can head south into W. Sahara and Mauritania.

Antalya, Turkey 4h 20m Norwegian - skirt the coast and head to border area w/ Syria, crossing over if possible. rickshaw was just there and details are on the board. Cyprus is a flight/ferry ride away as is Lebanon.

Bangkok, Thailand 10h 50m Thai - You can get up to all sorts of trouble here. Other places an easy flight away.

Belgrade, Serbia 2h 50m Norwegian

Doha, Qatar 6h 25m Qatar

Dubai, United Arab Emirates 7h 0m Norwegian - good transit point for other places in Africa, ME, S Asia

Geneva, Switzerland 2h 35m Norwegian - die from boredom

Islamabad, Pakistan 7h 0m Pakistan
Istanbul, Turkey 3h 40m Turkish

Moscow, Russia 2h 22m Aeroflot, SAS - go around the time of the elections (March)

And since that really didn't reveal much here's some ideas from Dubai (Oslo - Dubai on Norwegian is a little over 500 euros r/t; 371 euro on Lufthansa via Munich):

To Duration Airlines

Accra, Ghana 9h 0m Emirates

Hence "nice" for the denizens of the BFC...

Jesus Christ, that is so true. I saw so many guys in India dressed like the douchebag in the picture you attached - it was just unbelievable.

Whoa! Great advices, or so it seems.

My list of actual places, no spesific order;

Khatorum
Islamabad
Baghdad
Gaza-strip (?)
Al Basrah
Kabul

Anyone of these boring, and witch is the least boring alternative. Or did I just skip all your funny places. Already been to Glasgow, Morroco, Turkey, Riga and Switzerland of those on your list. They weren´t even slightly fun.

Islamabad is boring but has a Pizza Hut. If going to Pak Lahore and Peshawar are cool as is the KKH. Kabul is also worth a few days and I think the Kyber Pass is open to foreigners again.

Reviewed some photos of the places mentioned.Bad places, but not shitholes as far a I could see, but these may well be pictures showing the sunshine version. By shithole I am thinking in the lines of ruined houses, and militia in the streets. Was in the Mathare slum in Kenya, interesting place. Extreme poverty and all you expect to see, but this time i am looking for a place where a corrupt pretend-to-be-state-official might kill you with an AK47.

Thank you. Why, if I may ask? This is not a very unlikely situation in i.e. Congo.
