Eiffel Tower? Cliche-ridden and tacky. Strictly for American tourists.

If it has to be Paris, what about this spot?

Wow, not up on the Middle East, but that's an amazing place.
En route on the Trans-Siberian railway.

Meh. Just bicycled across Russia last year and I don't like trains :).

What's going to impress her friends and family more, "He proposed in front of some thing in some place you've never heard of" or "he proposed in front of the ever romanticized eiffel tower"?

Classics are classics for a reason. You know why proposing at sports games are tacky? Because they ARE tacky. You know why proposing at lame places is lame? Because they ARE lame.

Yeah, but it's France. As an American with, um, partial British ancestry it just won't do.

Not to be too picky, but if you can do Old Faithful at Yosemite, it would be truly epic...been to at least half of the places on your list and they're all good...the redwoods worked for me...

I agree. As an American, if I didn't want to spend a lot of money on airplane tickets there are many good choices. Especially in the western states, I think.
Getting a bit of a travel bug, though.
Madrid ... What's in Madrid?

Tapas, 20% unemployment, all night bars and clubs, a douchebag named Cristiano Ronaldo, Prado, a new riverwalk park + the Buen Retiro, Avila and Segovia day trips, Barcelona only a few hrs away

If it's proposing in August you seek: searing heat, concrete, bare streets, high prices bc everyone's on vacation; avoid anywhere that tourists go ie anywhere in Spain/Europe

Great suggestions Ktrout, but aren't there any more esoteric spots rather than touristy snapshots you could propose? Perhaps even by a quiet lake near the town called "I Wish I Had A Basement"

LOL. I'm going to wait to respond to that remark until after I've come up with a suitably smartass comeback.

Not sure if I plan to get that far north. You had to go with the dead tree solution instead of just using Google Maps?

I like people getting married because it temporarily keeps priests away from children.

This will only work if your fiancee is imaginary.

LOL, but it must exist. I've bicycled within 20km of it. Just that Amsterdam was a better draw than chocolate.
