Three of the first nine adventure travelers:

Now that I'm here, I remember RYP and how he should make the list.

Man vs. Wild didn't make the grade. Not sure I was thinking of him as a traveler, even tho he does quite a bit of traveling. Honestly, out here in Thailand I don't get to see his show very often and I just forgot about him. I just read an article about him in Outside Online the other day and I didn't even think of him. Thing is, I like his show. Somehow I think he belongs above Karl Pilkington, but he's such an idiot (abroad), he makes me laugh.

I wanted to introduce my absolute favorite to you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rüdiger_Nehberg
Unfortunately, there is very little information about him available in english, but this guy is the real deal; crossed the Atlantic two times(using a tree and a pedal boat), had himself exposed in the Amazon without any equipment(not even a knife or proper shoes) at the age of 68, crossed the danakil desert during eritrean-ethiopian civil war in 1977 and so on...
The most appealing point about that is, that, not only he represents a very reduced style of travelling in terms of equipment, but always puts himself on the line in a way that most "adventure travelers" of our days would not even dare to think about. Moreover he initiated a very effective charity nowadays mostly fighting against FGM, which had some real impact in the north african region.

Interesting. The nine travelers I listed are obviously only a few of the people who are adventure travelers. The media has alot to do with what is known about travelers and while I tried to put a mix of people in the list, I know there are probably thousands of others who simply have not received the media attention as those on the list.
