RTW v3 2014 suggestions?

Postby marie-angelique » Wed Oct 10, 2012 11:38 pm

So it looks like I am eligible for another year off in 2014. Thinking of doing another RTW only on a small dual sport motorbike this time.

I need some inspiration. So far the plan is:
Far East Russia,
cross the Gobi in Mongolia
cross into the Altai Republic and over to Tuva (in Siberian Russia)
Kazakhstan
Turkmenistan
more stans
Afghanistan
Azerbaijan
Georgia
Armenia
Ngorno-Karabakh

and if there's time, Cairo to Capetown - route TBD

Anything I should be adding to the list? I have 15 months to do it.

Define "Far east Russia". Magadan? Chita? You could go to Vladivostok and ride through Harbin and Manzhouli. Or Vladivostok around the border.
Get a boat/airplane ride from Capetown to SA and ride home?
But I just did Beijing to Amsterdam (13,000km-ish) by bicycle in five months. You must be able to make better time on a moto. But I kept seeing the same two Polish guys on motos in Russia, so maybe not...

Yah, most likely Magadan. Already been to Ha'erbin, so meh. Prolly go 'straight' from Magadan to Ulan Bataar.

The bike is not going home. I have places to leave it in either E Europe or England.

Yah, not planning to do gobs of miles each day. I get too distracted. Ha.

Yeah, on bicycle you have to stay focused since 100 miles/200km a day is doing really well.

Question: How the hell do you become eligible for a year off?

Where I teach we are eligible for a year off with 60% pay every 7th year. We have to either do research or travel.

Incredibly, very few of my colleagues take advantage of it. I was talking to one today, he said he would like to, but he would have a hard time leaving his cats behind. No joke.

Thanks. I don't find out for certain until next fall. Wish me luck!

Nah. Being born in America is luck. Having an employer who gives you a year off is a choice. Even though since I live in the same state it's on my nickel.

Just don't get sucked into any witch hunts. I hear that can really mess up your career.
