Anyone been to Kosovo lately?

Ah, well, the place that he put me up across the street from him had that just-built brick facade, very little lighting in the interior hallway and was definitely being renovated at the time so I'm sure is fair and square now. That's definitely a nice neighborhood Rugova used to be the neighbor one street over. I wonder if there was a bit of an flight of rich though from it once the war came - even in '05 it seemed a bit bare.

When I stayed inside the apartment itself I had a nice big bed, space heater, and barely working tv for about 10-15 euros. Pristina was relatively inexpensive compared to the reports I heard from Skopje - 30 euro for a dorm bed in the only hostel there at the time.

It was odd but I saw the film Kukumi one day at that theatre I talked about earlier and the next day happened to meet up with this girl and her Finnish friend that I had met in Sofia. It turned out that during my day wandering about Pristina they had befriended a student from the film school in Prizren that the movie had came out of. So we all went to Prizren and got a very exclusive tour not only of their facility but an excellent guide to the city itself. We went to the hill above the burnt out Orthodox churches and also went to a barren school where the teachers were on strike and the windows were broken out and some other places.

You were going to hitchhike to this Brod? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makedonski_Brod

That would've been quite a trip! I took the 4x4 taxi from Gjakova to Bajram Curri which was a pretty exciting little trip over rough country. From the looks of it, hitchhiking to Brod would take you through most of Albanian Macedonia. That would've been cool. Next time eh?

As much as I'm looking forward to my tropical Asia trip in a month, I do have a soft spot for E Europe (esp. the Southern Balkans) and look forward to getting back there one of these days.

Nope, this Brod: http://wikitravel.org/en/Brod
Some Kosovar kids told me about it, said it was really cool. That would have been a good trip as well. Definitely next time.
Here is the Valania Neighborhood:

Vagabond, do you remember seeing this uncompleted church by the library? We were told the Serbs started to build it, but when the war broke out, they left it. I asked "Why is it left abandoned?" He laughed "They were building it in the wrong country!" He also said they (the Kosovars) didn't want to tear it down because it was intended as a place of worship.
Now it's just an empty, sad looking building on University property, surrounded by barbed wire.

Going/deploying there in a week with my unit, so not exactly as a tourist.

Will try to take some photos if I get the opportunity.

Whups I was reading this as though it was still in the travel section. That's what I get for searching from Google...
