There's something not right about that guy's head, but I can't quite work out what it is. Glad to see you're still flying over these parts mate.

Saw Lyse Doucet do a piece (she is a smug old bird, I could barely watch it) on a guy hunting for a sleeping Buddha at bamiyan. Have you come across him? Seems like an interesting character.

They found it last September, a month before I first went up there, although it wasn't the 300m long statue described by the immortal Xuanzang, the Chinese pilgrim (and inspiration for "Journey to the West") who first chronicled the site about 630 A.D. It was buried just behind the cliff where the big niches are, and is 19m long, but it is the famed sleeping Buddha after all, and the troglodyte Taliban never even noticed it. Allah is a buddhist after all.

I never met any archaeologists there, but there was a boxhead artist who was collecting all the little pieces, mostly on the smaller buddha, and labelling them. He was a very nice guy who shared our hotel with us, his female Iranian oppo was a sort too, it's funny watching big tough blokes go all gooey when a beautiful, charming young lady joins them at mealtimes.

Bamiyan is crawling with de-miners, one of whom had the bad form to blow himself up on top the City of Screams before we had breakfast one morning, spoiling the quiet contemplation of the cliff whilst quaffing eggs and coffee on the cloistered hotel terrace, dashed bad show.

I have been told by my Iranian friends that there is nothing left to destroy in Afganistan. Your pictures say otherwise. Keep them coming they are wonderful. And again apologies for the affront. You have a coffee table book just in this post.
So long and thanks for all the fish

"Boxhead" - British Army slang for "German"

"A sort" - A fit bird

"Oppo" - workmate
